I think you should head to the hospital. This pain sounds very serious.

Could be a sore throat/ear infection. If it's that, it will get worse in the next few days. Also, I have neck/back issues and sometimes will get an earrache when my neck is out of whack.

Maybe not the emergency room, but I would definitely see a doctor. Could be a plethora of things causing it, from infection to a pulled muscle.

pulled tongue muscle? that would be a first for me :P
  • I'm a nurse....I would go in for that if it hasn't gotten any better by tomorrow...even if it's just to Urgent Care. No need to go to the ER unless you are having troubles breathing or something serious happens. Maybe try some spray that numbs the back of the throat? or does it feel more like the muscles in the back of your tongue?

Do you still have your wisdom teeth? If so that's probably it...if not it's probably your tonsils I would see a doc or oral surgeon ASAP! If you at any point have trouble swallowing or breathing go to the ER!

OH have you gotten your wisdom teeth removed? could be starting to grow through the skin, it can be extremely painful and usually the only option is surgery.

oops, she beat me to it :)
  • I agree with heading to a walk in clinic, but in the meantime gargle with warm salt water. 1 tsp to about 1/2 c. warm water. Ears and throat are connected so perhaps you have an ear infection. Not a doctor, just a thought.

Definately sounds like a tooth issue.....my boyfriend has something very similiar happen a few years ago. You should go see a dentist ASAP. You don't want an infection to get in your jaw.

It could be a pulled muscle in the tongue...have you done anything (yawning big, throwing up, etc) that could cause it? It could also be wisdom teeth as the ladies above suggested--do you still have those? Orrrrr it could be an ear infection. ((Weird sidenote--the sides of my tongue in the wayyyyy back always itch when I'm getting one...and my back teeth sometimes hurt))
  • Or it could be something like an infection in one of the back teeth.

I saw the other day on tv where a man swallowed a bee and it stung him....he ended up being allergic and was hospitalized...sometimes I chew on a tortilla chip wrong and puncture or scrape the inside of my mouth. How lo g have you been in pain?

Well maybe the "yet" is "now"! They could be coming in more.

Do you still have tonsils? Have you checked your throat with a flashlight? Only other thing I ever had was a piece of something stuck behind a tonsil, drove me crazy. This sounds more painful though.

This sounds like strep .. I was hospitalized for 4 days last year with it .. Infection kept returning soo I had a tonsillectomy and I've never had any problems since .. Hope you get better soon !! You really sound seek some kinda medical attention tho
  • In Australia we have phone lines with nurses/gp's who can advise you on the best thing to do! Where r u?

Strep, canker sore, or abscess. Two of the three deserve attention immediately.
  • It will not fix the problem, but if you are in severe pain....grab an old sock! Throw some salt into a frying pan and heat it up. Pour the heated salt (very carefully lol) into the sock and tie it off. Hold the sock on the outside of your neck/face/jaw area where it hurts. The sock is pliable and will form fit to where you need it to be. ( becareful to touch test first so you don't burn your skin!!) This is an old wives tale, so to speak, that a friend told me of when I was 5 months pregnant and my wisdom teeth impacted. The dentists wouldn't touch me at the time so I used this trick and it works very well. The friends I have told about this also claim it works for teeth, sore throats, sinus infections, etc. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!.
