I always wondered about this but was afraid to ask. when doing exercise at home aerobics. I always do it with no sneakers. Is that ok? I mean is it bad for the feet or body when doing aerobics without sneakers. i know it's probably a silly question. but I'm not sure. thanks for reading.

I think it all depends on the activity. Good shoes provide you with stability (to prevent injury) and cushioning (to limit the impact/shock on joints). You can replace the cushioning part with a well-carpeted floor or yoga mat, but the stability part is important. Personally, I always wear shoes... except when I dance. It may be easier to just use the video instructor as your guide. If he/she is wearing shoes, take it as a sign that you should too.

    Hi!
There are no questions that are too silly to ask! That's what is so great about this site!
I sometimes do my exercises at home without shoes. Only disadvantage I notice is that it gets a bit slippery on the mat when you get very sweaty.
I'm no expert on the subject, but personally feel like it's better to do exercise bare foot than with very bad shoes. But I agree what the person above says: good shoes give you cushioning and stability.

I had thesame question in the back of my mind. I usually do them without shoes because I am more comfortable that way (my regular workout is martial arts and I don't wear shoes for that). Also I find it hard to move on the carpet with shoes on. If your feet don't hurt afterward you should be fine.

We were born without shoes and in reality shoes can create foot problems (high heels, shoes that force toes to scrunch together). Studies do show that people who don't wear shoes except for maybe going out have less foot problems, less achilles problems and less calf problems than their shoed counterparts when participating in activity. I don't wear shoes when at home and wil wear flip flops as much as possible. I only wear shoes going out.

It depends on what you're doing.

I would NEVER do any exercise without proper footwear.

It is welcoming injury based on my own workouts.

If your doing it with or without shoes....at least you are doing it, right?!
I say, we are meant to go barefoot so if it doesn't bother you then no big deal!

No questions are silly, it all depends on the activity and intensity. If its high impact (anything running on the treadmill, jump rope etc), u definitely need shoes. Personally, I always wear shoes as they provide extra cushioning, the only thing when I dont wear shoes are when I do low impact yoga, pilates or stretch exercises. Hope this helps!!!

So funny that you should ask!! Normally I do Zumba at my gym, shoes on, of course. But there are no classes until the 9th of Jan so yesterday I did a Zumba DVD at home on the carpet with shoes, and I hated it! I felt really restricted in my moves, heavy on my feet and they hurt afterwards. So I was just debating with myself if I should do the DVD tonight without shoes or not and then your question appears!! Thank you for asking!!!! (and I've decided to go 'no shoes' tonight!)

    Hi,
I came to find out that we don't work our feet muscles enough which is why we tend to have problems with our ankles, knees, hips, and back. There are over 60 different muscles in the feet that are designed to take the impact of exercise but we never strengthen them because we cushion them with shoes. I don't like to exercise barefoot so I spoke to a specialist and they highly recommended the 5-finger shoes. I have a knee injury and with these shoes I have been able to do all of my old exercises, even running again, and strengthen my knee. You should speak to your doctor and let them know what exercise you are doing, I am sure they will be able to advise you. Good Luck!!!!

I go shoeless at home on the carpet or a yoga mat... I wear shoes for running outside or at the gym.
  • I think as long as you're not doing it with any kind of weights or dumbells its fine - you wouldn't wanna drop a 10 pound dumbell on your toes!

Go how you feel - if its not painful, then its fine - if ankles / knees / hips start feeling achy then its a sign you need more support.
    - you certainly won't cause any severe damage if you listen to how your body responds and respond appropriately.
High impact exercise tends to be more comfortable with today's shoe technologies...
