Ok So Chicago is doing a 5K on January first. I've decided to be a little ambitious and sign up for it. I have no idea what to wear. Is sweats and a hoody ok? The guy at under amour showed me this shirt that has breathable fabric in the armpits but I'm not convinced that's all I'll need. Right now it says That it's supposed to be mostly cloudy/windy and 34. But the last three days I've been keeping a close eye on it, it's changed. Not by much. The temp has pretty much stayed the same it's just one time it'll say light chance of snow the next 60% rain or completely sunny. lol. Any advice would be great.

Sweats and hoody if they are cotton will be bulky and heavy if you sweat in them. Try some tights/shorts. Then a compression shirt (Old navy, marshels, even target) have some then a short sleeve over that. Then try to wear something like a light wind breaker or something. Then some lightweight gloves.

Then again, it's only about 3 miles. but the cotton stuff just seems like unnecessary weight to jog in

Cotton is just a bad idea all the way around. Sweat and if it rains may cause you some major chafing. I live in Mississippi, and although we can get a away with mostly shorts and long sleeves here in 37 degree weather, it may be different there. I myself might go with capri running tights, and a long sleeve tech DRI shirt. No cotton. Probably a running beanie. I usually plan on dressing like it's 20 degrees warmer than it really is, based on my personal experience!

Not that it helps much, but I remember jogging in the fall around the same temperature and was surprised at how warm/hot I'd get considering what little I was wearing. Often I'd have to remove gloves and my hat. (this was around the time it'd snow every few days, but not really stay on the ground)
  • I am a Canadian, so I run in the cold (I even run in snow and ice, with cleats over my shoes). I have found that I really don't have to wear a lot even when it is below 0 celsius. I wear a long sleeved running shirt as a base layer (KEY: must be a technical material that will absorb your sweat like coolmax!! Cotton will cause sweat to stay against your skin and when it cools you will be cold, wet and miserable). I usually wear a running jacket over my long sleeve shirt when it is cool enough to (I usually don't need it), either another technical material, or you can go for a windbreaker if wind is an issue. I have never needed more than these two layers. I wear lululemon yogas or running pants (I have natural insulation on my lower body :P). Gloves and earmuffs and I am set for any weather. KEYS: no cotton- you will be cold and very unhappy once you have been sweating, layers so you can take off the jacket if you get too warm once you have been running, Cover as much skin as possible- only my face is exposed. Hope this helps, a lot of trial and error (training in Canada for Las Vegas Rock and Roll Marathon December 4th) brought me to these conclusions. Have fun :)

I asked for a long sleeved running shirt for the winter and my daughter (17) bought me one. I wore it today and it was really warm. I ran in rain with a light jacket and was too warm soon into my run. I definitely see runners in hats and gloves in the winter. Alot of those wide knit hairbands. I really have the same question as you do but thought I would put in what I have gleaned so far.

Wide head/hair band for the ears. Under Armour All-Season gear pants. Long sleeve semi-fitted shirt. Wool running socks.

Thank you guys so much! I have gotten both cold gear/compression long sleeved shirt and capris. My hubby and I are going to go and do a practice 5k tomorrow just to make sure it's comfortable. The weather will be similar and so will where we're doing to the practice run so hopefully it'll work out well. I'm going to a pair of kindof sweat pants over my papris and a tshirt on top of my shirt and probably borrow my hubbys wind breaker. I guess now it's time to just do it. I'm a little nervous. lol
