Ketosis

I'm just wondering if there are any md's or dieticians/nutritionists around that can tell me how long it takes to become ketogenic? For instance, how many days of low carb does it take?

And how low do the carbs have to be?

Today, I am coming in under 40, is that low enough?

I do not make this a habit, but am trying to kickstart myself. Following the primal lifestyle, and normally net around 80 to 90 grams of carbs a day.

Thanks for the help,
Ange

Hello, I find if I do 2 days of low-carb...around 20...that'll put me in ketosis. I've got pee sticks but I also know because I don't really feel hungry and I end up wanting to drink a ton of water :-))

    Edit: just to add...I'm not a dietician/nutritionist :-))

LOL thanks, lat. I don't have the sticks, and have never really tried to achieve it.

Although I cannot answer your question from a dietician standpoint, I do know that it varies for each individual depending on their recent carb intake, etc. But you can buy keto sticks that can test it -- not sure exactly how accurate they are but I am sure they can give you some idea. Also found this site that you may find helpful in general: http://www.ketodietplan.com/ketogenic-diet/

what exactly are you trying to kickstart? ketogenic diets do not have any metabolic advantage

I'm trying to do a low / lower carb lifestyle... this is the 4th day where I haven't eaten anything like wheat, potato, sugar or rice etc... And I feel way more energetic than usual, and don't get horrible bloating... so regardless of whether i'm eating few enough carbs (~50g / day) to go into ketosis, the change has been positive for me anyway!!

Thanks, guys. ACg, I'm trying to end a long plateau (we're talking MONTHS) and have heard it can work to jumpstart fat loss. My understanding has been that the danger of it is in not getting enough nutrients because you cut everything with carbs, including all those good fruits and veggies.

I don't know that I've been in ketosis, I haven't really been trying. Just following the Primal WOE and by proxy I'm very often under 50g a day. But sometimes I'm closer to 80. Still eating all the nutrient dense foods I always have.

Sparrow, I know what you mean about feeling better! I'm almost three weeks now with NO sugar, grains or artificial sweeteners. It's great!
  • I have been trying for almost 3 weeks now, and no go. I net no more than 30g, often 20g, of carbs, but the ketostix still don't read that I'm in ketosis. I need fiber, but I don't want to JUST take supps.

I tried high fat, mod protein and super low carb, but that didn't seem to work because calories could get too high too quickly. Now I'm back to high protein, mod-low fat and super low carbs.

I've been low carb/wheat free since August I didn't know about ketone sticks though.. no idea if I'm in ketosis and what advantage it might be giving me? I've no idea exactly how many grams of carbs I'm eating (in veg) but I don't eat bread, rice, potato, grains most days.. usually have treat meal once a week where may allow sweet potato chips or jacket potato for a change.
