I haven't played kinect sports so I'm not sure how that is exercise wise. (I got my kinect for Christmas, dance central is too much fun so the other games haven't been played yet)

for dance central I wear a heart monitor and log it as my own exercise (created one)... this is becasue what song your doing or how long it took you to move to the next song greatly impacts how much you would burn. (Some are high energy and hard, and some you stand there and more your arms)

You'll have to create the exercises yourself. There aren't any in the MFP database that I've seen. I've got YourShape: Fitness Evolved and created the exercises as "YourShape: Fitness" and then added "- (Exercise name here)" for each one I've done. So it looks like "YourShape: Fitness - Cardio" or "YourShape: Fitness - Skinny Jeans Workout" lol. I'm not sure if when you create your own, others can use it. It'd be nice if they could. But I've only done YSFE so...

As for the other Kinect games, I'm unsure since they don't usually tell you the calories you've burned when you play them. If you can figure out how many calories you're burning, create them as "Kinect Sports - (Sport name here)" and enter the information in yourself. Good luck :D

I use my wristwatch heart rate monitor. If you can get one of those, even a cheap one from Walmart ($30), it helps tremendously with accurate counting. Before I got the watch I used the MFP database and if an exercise wasn't listed, I found one I thought was close and used that calorie count. It wasn't too far off, I was actually burning more calories than MFP said because I'm so fat. But the HRM is much more accurate. Sometimes I can play the same game on Kinect I played yesterday (say, Rallyball) but feel lazy and burn way less calories in the same time period.

Oh, and Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 drastically underestimates my burn, so if you get that one, don't despair at how slow its calorie counter scrolls up!

Haha I'm sure the first version is the same way. It'll say I've only burned so many calories but it feels like I burn so much more. As soon as income taxes are returned I'm gonna try to buy a HRM of some sort, if we have the money to do so. But for now even getting in the basic so-many calories in to where I can visibly see that I'm losing it helps me to stay motivated. IMO I think it's just a basic "your weight + time of the exercise = calories lost". Kind of like a "general public" type of thing.
  • I was wondering the same thing!
I have Your Fitness Evolved (not the new one)--I have just been using a little note book to keep track of my progress.
My friend Tanya and I have been using it (and are going to start FRESH today)...

I suppose I can just add it myself!

It depends what you're doing. Most games have a workout mode to calculate your calories for you. I have a bodybugg and with zumba i burn about 9 calories a minute, and dance central about 7-8, and I weigh 157. Hope that helps.

    Hi
I just got a Kinect and Kinect Sports today and downloaded a calorie challange ad on. Basically you choose how many calories you want to burn and it sets you different challanges to complete until you have reached or exceeded the target.
Me and my husband have had a go at all the sports and dance central today and I just logged it as dance general and aerobics general.

I am interested in getting a heart monitor though. Would that give me a more accurate picture of how much I am burning through the day?

    Thanks

I have sent Alicja a message but in case anyone else wants to check it out, the add on can be accessed in the Kinect Sport game in the extras section and I first saw that there was a calorie challenge in the game, in the stadium part where can can make the crowd cheer and mexican wave. It was 320 credits.

Yes a heart rate monitor would give you a much more accurate number FJHutch.

For example with dance central it has no idea how long I sat between dances or if I went right to another one, how much I weigh, etc.
