Carbs!

Hey guys iv been doing the low carb diet for the last couple of months (stooped in the middle of December) i was restricted to 20 -30 carbs a day and now im eating 150.....is that to much?..i didnt really lose any when i went on low carb the second time for those two months and now im just trying to eat healthy and veggies and proteins and that type of stuff low fat pretty much....how many carbs a day do you think is healthy to take in? what worked best for you>

There is no ideal amount of carbs as it's a non essential macronutrient. The better way to go about it, is shoot for a MINIMUM of 1g of protein per lb of lbm and .35-.45g of fat per lb of bodyweight and fill in the remaining cals however you would like.
150g of carbs would only be considered too much if you have a metabolic disorder that requires you to stay under that amount or you cannot hit the above mentioned minimums for proteins and fats0 -
I just make sure I get enough protein, and try to eat good fats. I don't worry about carbs -- those numbers can fall where they may. Going low-carb for me makes me ill.0

Carbs are delicious. I eat a lot of them; I don't even know how many, nor do I even think about it.
It's possible to be fit and eat carbs. All the athletes I know do it.

Perhaps having a chat with a registered dietician who has communications with your primary care could help you determine what is right for you as an individual?
Some people can do very well with 60g, others 100g, others 150g, but there are folks like myself who needed to definitely have a physician's/specialist's guidance because I have a few things going on and I didnt want to cause any contraindications...0 -
I follow the Atkins diet...it is a higher fat, moderate protein and low carb program. Fat satiates you and curbs your hunger...I eat healthy fats like coconut oil and olive oil. Yes, I do eat bacon grease also...use it in my green beans and to fry eggs in. I am never hungry....your nutrients would like this ...fats: 60-65% Protein: 30-35% and carbs: 10%
With that being said....you should always read up on the Atkins site or read the book so you know the guidelines....12-15 of your carbs should be net carbs (carbs minus fiber and sugars) and should be veggies. The remainder would be from other items...condiments, etc. and no more than 20-25 total for your 2 weeks on induction. Many people think that following Atkins is just unlimited meat and eggs and that just is not the case...I have done LC for 10 yrs with the exception of the last couple of years and was side tracked with school. Therefore I am here to get off my "College" few I gained from sitting so much.
Please check out this site....www.genaw.com She has LC for several years and is well knwon in the LC community...even if you don't do Atkins and you just do LC, you will love her recipes....every recipe with a * (asterik) is induction friendly. I have not had one recipe that I did not like....she has pictures and short notes about the recipe as well.
It is said as long as you stay under 50 total carbs you will burn fat.(but I don't know for a fact)..add in sugar or other carbs and you are going to burn that first before fat. The same as if you drink alcohol, you will burn that first before fat. When doing LC, do NOT use your scale as your only guide....it is well known that you will/may lose inches before you lose weight on the scale. ALWAYS measure and then weigh....use a tight pair of jeans as a guide. And you should never weigh before 2 wks when you first start...with said, I am a scale aholic and weigh daily While I have only lost 10 lbs...i ahve lost 15 inches from my body I don't truly care what the scale says as long as I cam getting into smaller clothes and people are noticing!

To me, carbohydrates are great fuel for keeping me feeling energetic. I just scrolled through my diet summary. Usually, I'm between 150-200 per day, I do try to make them complex, but won't say I've been so good all the time. It didn't hurt my weight loss effort. It probably depends on the person, but I don't think low carbohydrate diets are very sustainable.0

Low carb diets are deff sustainable...and most people feel a burst of energy after they have depleted those sugars and carbs from their bodies. Also research shows where more and more people, children included with epilepsy seizures are thriving on LC diets as it is the carbs that attack their bodies and deplete them of energy/good nutrients.
Whatever program you decide to go with, I wish you the best...all plans have their faults. Even WW, SB, etc...if you go off plan or quit moving, you gain it back. I am doing crossfit and am never short of energy or strength....where there are wills, there are ways! I get lots of carbs from veggies, fruit and nuts, etc

I just found the pie chart graph on my iPhone app and was shocked to see the allotment for carbs. Yikes. I need to focus on adding protein and cutting back on carbs. More than half my intake each day was carbs. Then I found the tool online to track sugar and calcium, 2 things I should watch.
I got Greek yogurt to cycle in this week, and turkey breakfast sausage. I got some canned beans that I will rinse and sprinkle onto my salad. I got string cheese, too. Any other protein suggestions? (No eggs)0 -

Yes, low carb diets have some benefits in children with epilepsy, but carbs do NOT attack their bodies. I do not know why low carb is good for epilepsy. I'm not sure anyone does with certainty. I imagine their is plenty of speculation, but it would be hard to prove definitively what is happening. It is better to say 'we don't know why' than to assume than an inanimate molecule such as a carb is attacking anything.
I hope you don't feel picked on I'm not trying to make you feel bad. There's just way too much of the "carbs are evil!!!!!" mentality out there for me to feel comfy leaving a misunderstanding alive as fuel for the anti-carb crusade. (I'm not suggesting you're part of the anti-carb crusade... you seem to have done your homework and you have chosen a life-style that suits your needs while understanding that it doesn't suit everyone).0 -
"Healthy" carbs for me is slightly over 100 grams daily. Less than that and I lose weight quickly - and no, I'm not insulin resistant.

Sorry but that is so wrong.. it is totally sustainable if you are doing it correctly... My most recent blood test results, my 68# weight loss are proof enough to three specialty physicians that it is being done correctly...0 -
Glad that your chosen plan is working for you. I wish you continued success. "For me"- when I deprive myself of too many carbohydrates, I get very moody and end up triggering a binge due to the deprivation. Everyone is different. :flowerforyou:0

Just starting to do Atkins, and I reviewed the menu plans on the website. I understand that I should limit my netcarbs to 20-25. The meal plans on the website for the induction phase includes some of the Atkins bars, and the front of the box says 3 netcarbs, but the nutritional information on the back says total carbs 18, dietary fiber 6, sugars 1 and sugar alcohols 9? I thought that netcarbs was calculated by subtracting the dietary fiber from the total carbs? What am I missing? Should eat these on the induction phase? Help!!!0

I don't count the grams but my carbs only come from vegetables as I don't eat processed carbs like bread, rice, pasta.
I allow potato once a week which is usually a sweet potato. I eat clean so everything is grown from ground/trees or comes from animals.0 -

Meat! there is no reason to be afraid of lean meat, just don't have a bunch of fried foods like hamburgers. A couple slices of turkey are quite filling, mostly protein, and less than 100 calories. Nuts are a great source of essential fatty acids, and also have a decent amount of protein as well.0 -
My carbs vary greatly from day to day. Some days would qualify as low carb, some days I eat as much as 200+ carbs. I concentrate more on the type of carbs I'm eating than on the amount. I stick to whole grains (limiting whole grain flour products), plenty of veggies and some fruit. I've eaten this way for 20+ years and I'm healthy and at a healthy weight.0
