    Run.
  • Start with running in place and jumping jacks to get your body warm. Then stretch well. It will really help keep you from getting sore and allow you to push yourself harder without any injury.

    jumping jacks
    walk in place
    elliptical - easy
    brisk walk
    jog - okay but easy
    rowing
    recumbent bike
generally if i'm going to run, i do a crosstrain activity to warm up first, then my main activity.

after? you mean cool down. anything that will lower your heart rate (just slower) and this would be an excellent time to stretch your muscles

Stretching has NOT been shown in scientific study to prevent injury. While stretching should be done to keep flexibility, it doesn't have to be part of a warm up. However if one wants to use stretching to warm up, then it should be DYNAMIC stretching and NOT STATIC stretching.

It depends what exercise you are warming up for!

Before weight-training, try an all-body cardio machine like rowing or elliptical trainer. Then do the first set with a much reduced weight than the weight you're aiming for, or even do the movement without resistance.

Before cardio, start with a slower version of your intended session and gradually build up.

Before a long or fast run, for example, I do a nice long warm up with 2 min walk, 1 min run, 1 min walk, 1 min run, 1 min walk, 5 mins slow jog, THEN go into my planned session.

As other have said, stretch afterwards, not as part of your warm up.
