I'm in China. You can't eat fresh veggies here -- it's super unhealthy.
If you try, you'll get food poisoning.0 -

Not even if they're cooked??
That would suck.0 -
I had no idea about getting sick from the fresh there, I'm sorry, that's rough. I forget sometimes what a blessing it is to have healthy food readily accessible here. Personally I just like oranges so I could eat them by themselves. Maybe look up a healthy orange chicken recipe.0

I make orange cranberry bread every Christmas and give as gifts to family. Here is a healthy version. I'm thinking you could juice the oranges yourself to make the orange juice. If you can't find fresh cranberries, you can try dried but it will probably not be as good.
I also bought a bag of mandarin oranges and they are getting a little ripe so I have been squeezing them on fish and chicken along with dried herbs before cooking. It gives a little orange flavor to it, but is not too overpowering.0 -
i'm in china, too, and i eat fresh veg all the time. of course, i have been here for seven years, so perhaps my stomach is used to the lil buggies that might be on the veg.
that being said, i would give some oranges as gifts to friends and nom the rest!0 -

You can cook veggies -- stir-fried vegetables and meats are the national cuisine. It's just not a good idea to eat fresh veggies or fruits, even if after they're washed. This is true for most developing nations because of how they fertilize the crops. (DON'T read about this if you want to eat today.) So I haven't had a proper salad since I was in Australia two years ago. I miss them terribly.
It's pretty safe to eat fruit like oranges or bananas that are (a) from trees, (b) in thick skins and (c) are peeled.
I'd try bread, but I only have a microwave oven. (As weird as that sounds, it's pretty standard in Guangdong.) I'll try the squeezing idea. But on tofu, since I don't eat meat. That's a really good idea.
I also really like the jam idea. Do I need special equipment to prevent it from going bad?0 -

Yeah, I've only been here for one. I still get random food poisoning all.the.time. And as I said, I really, REALLY miss salads.
Here's the weird thing about Guangdong: you can't give away large naval oranges before Spring Festival because the word in a homophone for "unlucky" in Cantonese. You CAN give away tangerines because they're a homophone for luck. I'm told both kinds are traditional to give up north. I found that out the hard way last year. Whoops. (Also, maybe this means my boss hates me? But I can't remember where he's from, so maybe not.)
What part of China are you in, if you don't mind my asking?0 -
http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/1242/Really-Quick-Orange-Marmalade125347.shtml here is a recipe for orange marmalade that is just oranges and sugar and has a splenda alternative if you are avoiding sugar. Marmalade is refrigerated to keep from going bad.
Sorry didn't realize you were vegetarian! I think it would be good on tofu too. You could also put it on veggies after steaming. I usually put lemon and butter/margarine on my broccoli, I think it would probably be good with orange instead!
Edit: Typo0 -

I eat uncooked veg and fresh fruit all the time, have never, ever received food poisoning from it. Or are you just on about how they are grown in China?0 -

Really? I ate a lot of fresh veggies and fruit when I was in India. I did eventually get food poisoning, but I'm pretty sure it was from a paneer pastry I had at an airport and not anything fresh.0 -
what about fresh squeezed orange juice.0
-
Lots and lots of marmalade! Make sure you sterilise the jars in boiling water before you put the jam in, though, or it'll grow mould. You can also freeze fresh-squeezed orange juice - I imagine that's not easily available in China? - and keep it for ages that way.0

My mom does that too, and you can drink it if you add a few more ingredients!
Wassail Recipe
1 gal. apple cider
1 qt. orange juice
1 qt. pineapple juice, unsweetened
1 c. lemon juice, fresh
1 c. sugar
24 whole cloves
4 sticks cinnamon
Don't boil; let simmer until hot. Makes 1 1/2 gallons.0
