Im a big label reader and I try to measure out my food. But I was wondering what is a correct way of measuring your portions, by a food scale (wgt) or by using a measuring cup (volume)?

I know its not a science, but it would be nice to know

I heard that weighing is more accurate. I weigh everything possible.

When I can, I go with weight. I think it's more accurate, especially depending on the kind of food, i.e. pasta or cereal. Liquids and such, I'd go with volume.

Absolutely weigh everything on the scale... you'd be surprised how differently some people will measure a cup of something - but grams are grams, no mistaking that.

I mean, some people tightly pack or round off a measuring cup or spoon -- with grams you can't do that - way more accurate.
  • If you weigh everything, its not a long term type thing people can do because sometimes its impossible to weigh when your out and about..learn portion control with your eyes and you will memorize it:)

This only works for a specific hand size, though. I have much larger fingers than my wife, so my teaspoon measure compared to her teaspoon measure would be vastly different. Weighing is the best way to go, since volumetric measurements can vary just based on different food densities.

    LOVE THIS! Thanks for posting!

To the OP, I bought a digital scale at Target for around 17$ nothing fancy! It measures grams and oz. Like other posters, I measure with the scale cause sometimes you can get more per g/oz than "1/2c" when it calls for both servings.

I hate logging my food especially when they describe 'medium apple' or small banana...what do you consider small or medium? You know what i mean., My idea of small or medium may be different from the next person

I love the hand pics on portion sizes...THANKS GUYS!!

I just bought a cheap little kitchen scale at Walmart. It works for me.

I have also learned how to eyeball a portion size over my months of weighing and measuring. Because hand sizes do vary so much, I like more "standard" measurements, like a deck of cards is a portion of meat, a tennis ball is a portion of pasta, etc.

I use the items that specify size, preferably by weight. Many of the apple listings are "medium", but some list weight. For bananas, many of the entries are by length, which is pretty easy to double check.
