Hello,

I understand how the whole eating healthy thing works... I need to consume X amount of calories and I also need to take into consideration the calories I burn during workout, but I cannot even begin to consume the amount of calories MFP is calculating for me...

I am male, 22, work out 6 days a week (470 calories burned roughly) and I weigh 284.7 @ 6ft. tall.

With my excersize, MFP is wanting me to consume 2,399 calories. HOLY CRAP! That's a lot of calories! I am struggling to even fit in 1,000 calories and honestly I feel so sick after eating that many calories in a day. What am I doing wrong here???

Can anyone help me? :(

Have you logged any of you food on here yet? That will give us a better idea of what you are filling up on with so little calories. Also, have you tried protein or meal replacement shakes?

Yes, I just changed my settings so my diary is public. Go have a look.

Also, no I haven't really tried meal replacement shakes because they all taste so nasty and the ones that DO taste good are ungodly expensive. We're on a strict budget unfortunately.

I am less than half your weight, almost a foot shorter than you (granted I am female) but I think you are eating WAY too little or not logging EVERYTHING. Gosh I couldn't survive on this!!! And with your workouts...
Gotta get your protein in there...increase portions of meat and cottage cheese etc. Eat fruit and veggies, good carbs like oats, quinoa, brown rice, sweet potatoes...

    You are deficient in both proteins and fats, eat more of that. And if you can't hit calorie goals, calorically dense foods;

    Nuts

    Nut Butters

    Advocados

    Full Fat Dairy

    Pasta

    Ice Cream

    Oils

  • I looked at your diary - focus on hitting the NET calories (today it was 2399 bc you worked out, but another day I noticed you didn't workout and it was only 1900 somthing).

first of all i commend you for asking and for working on lifetime changes.. its tough finding something that works.. i read your diary for one day and i was like whoooaa..wayyy too much salt content. you need more protein..stay off the white flour products and try to go for whole grain..im addicted to sandwich thins and bagel thins.

try to lay off the lunch meat. anything processed is not good for you. theres a ton of sodium in it for one. try cooking up chicken at the beginning of the week so you can make chicken sandwiches or chicken in a salad of fresh spring greens and baby spinach leaves..

your breakfast is majorly important so try to include more protein. if you like yogurt then get the greek yogurt because it is higher in protein --also creamier. i buy plain greek nonfat yogurt because ive adjusted my taste buds to it but i add a cup of fresh berries to it. also for breakfast i eat egg whites -- two servings with red bell pepper and onion with italian seasoning in it.sometimes i have it with oatmeal or on a toasted bagel thin.. to add some flavor to it try sprinkling some franks hot sauce on it.

get rid of the chips..eat a sweet potato instead

you need to eat six times a day . healthy snacks with protein in them are recommended..

before you go to bed at night drink down a whey and casien shake. casien prolongs metabolism of the protein , hence keeping your metabolism up through the night .. its only about 120 calories too but it works

i have tons of ideas for creativity and eating on the go ..just friend me and i can share when you have questions..

keep moving forward !! youre off to a good start by trying !

I agree with most of the others. Although, I would have you look at your sugar intake. Instead of the yogurt with fruit, get plain (greek is better for you) non-fat yogurt and add raw fruit to it. I add a cup of strawberries or blueberries. Add truvia if you need the sweetness. Eat more vegitables and protein. The protein will bring your calorie count up. I ended up going to a nutritionist and that has worked wonders for me as well as been very educational on the kinds of food I should be eating. Nuts and avocados are very nutritional. You biggest meal should be in the morning no more that 1 hour after waking up. That reves up your motabolism to burn more calories thru out the day. Healthy snacks 3-4 hour in between Breakfast and Lunch and Dinner. No carbs, fats or sugars or alochol at dinner or afterwards. I've lost almost 60 lbs since mid June and am now starting to work out! Good luck.

Make sure to include good fats (olive oil or other vegetable oils, nuts, avacado, oily fish) in your diet. These are high calorie but your body needs them. Also make sure you are eating enough protien.

thats nice acg but i lost 80lbs eating healthy and following those suggestions. i am no longer on any medications and work out with the guys as well as run in races so i must be doing something right. theres no flab hanging anywhere either and my skin is not all wrinkles up but healthy looking.. processes meat is loaded with sodium and you cant possibly sit there and convince me that loaded sodium processed meat is good for you. this guy is trying to lose weight and eat healthier ..if anyone suggested processed and sugared anything i would say they are all nonsense

There's a difference between saying i preferred to eat 6 meals a day and i think it helped me, vs saying you NEED to eat 6 times a day

See the bold, so you agree with me that what you said is nonsense, as you suggested both whey and casein shakes, which are both doubly processed, and yogurt is processed as well

 seems the "processed food" term needs to be better defined.

I don't find frozen fruits processed, just flash frozen. By "processed", to most, it means "far from it's natural state" - boxed foods, etc. Of course milk is processed, as pasteurization is a process...so i see what you mean by that.

So you got those abs by eating the above foods eh?

I'd kill to have abs again and eat like him. I think he's just saying that ppl don't NEED to do everything recommended. Sometimes it best to find what works for you.

On top of the other suggestions, I notice that some of the foods you are eating are lowfat or low cal versions. If you are having a hard time getting enough calories, why not switch to the full version. That will rack up some extra calories.

Low fat or low calorie isn't necessarily healthier.

I concur. Low fat is often made tastier by adding more sugar, which in my opinion is probably more harmful! Try and cut out as much sugar as possible (I would say 'processed', but that's too loose a term as previous posts show ;o) in things like drinks, if you need a sweet thing go for fruit. With fats, try to avoid Trans fats and limit Saturated, but eat more Mono-unsaturated which you'll find in (as previous posts have said) rapeseed and olive oils, olives, avacados, nuts and seeds and dark chocolate. There is some evidence that these help regulate useful hormones and help your body lose fat - sounds counter-intuative but I've found it to be true for me.

It may seem really hard to up your calories but it's only because your body is used to eating so little, try to up it slowly, maybe by 100 calories every few days until you hit what you need to. Balance your macros (protein, fat and carbs) so you go neither hugely over or under on any of them, and persevere - I understand any change in diet takes at least 2 weeks to start having an effect (on the scales anyway) so give it some time.

    Good luck!
