I like to drink diet soda to distract from any cravings due to boredom or mindless eating. Ive heard that even if its diet, soda can take away from weight loss. Anyone have any opions, does diet soda really inhibit weight loss?

Not for me...I changed over to Coke zero when I started on MFP and it hasn't stopped my weight loss.

I have definitely heard that drinking diet sodas will inhibit weightloss. Frankly I cannot recall exactly why, but there was just another segment on a show this week about foods to avoid if trying to lose weight and the4 bottle of diet coke was right there- also OJ, can't recall the others!

A study discussing the insulin impact is discussed at http://www.foodnavigator.com/content/view/print/355035.

One theory is that your body associates sweetness with a certain level of caloric intake, and using non-caloric sweeteners breaks the link between sweetness and intake, so that you don't achieve satiety.

This study has its detractors, including the NIH, discussed at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2900484/.

There is also data showing that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) doesn't result in satiety. As evidence, I point to the lower incidence of obesity in Europe, where HFCS is not allowed as a substitute for sugar. If you order a Coke in Europe, it will have been made with sugar, not HFCS. Kosher Coke (available in the US during Passover) is also made with sugar. A discussion of HFCS and satiety can be found at http://www.ajcn.org/content/79/4/537.full

I've heard a lot of things about diet soda. One being that, another being that it creates cellulite. I mostly gave it up and only drink a Diet Mountain Dew when I really, really, really want/ need one. There's so much controversy, my paranoid self just cut it out.
