My husband's birthday is in a few weeks and I want to buy him a tablet to play words with friends, check email and go online if he goes somewhere and maybe have netflix.

He is not techie so I need something simple and I need something cheap as our budget is low now that we are retired. At least 7 inches though and a touch screen that won't drive him crazy like our cell phones do! LOL

Thanks ahead for any help!! :)

Are you married to any format now? ie.. Apple products or Android? I'd probably opt for one that you already have similar products with so you only have to use one app site for your stuff. Just for convenience.

We are a pc/mac family when our computers got old last year, Mike bought a HP pc windows 7 and I bought a large screen mac I have always wanted. So because of that I got a Ipad last year but think mike should get one for a pc like you said to keep things the same.

I didn't realize how many there were until I went on Amazon and since money is tight I wondered what was the best for less of the non ipad ones.
  • What's your budget? iPad is around $800. Toshiba Thrive for the Android lover for $500. Velocity Cruz tablet $119.
  • I have a Kindle Fire - it's $200. Good for me. Good for apps and internet browsing. The screen is only 7 inches, but some of the bigger ones I think are cumbersome.

    How about your phones?

We will probably end up with an iPad of some sort because we have iphones and I have a iPod nano. Plus my daughter has a iPod touch. so we only have to have iTunes. But the iPads are pretty expensive vs the samsung and others have to offer.

I think the Kindle is a stripped tablet version of the ipad. You really have to think about what you are going to use it for. And if the extra options the iPad and Samsung versions are worth it.

will the velocity cruz do netflix and have flash? He just needs simple but i was hoping for flash too with netflix and afraid that will up the price.

He won't be doing a lot with it mainly words with friends with his daughter thats why i don't want to spend much.

we don't have the internet on our phones because we are retired and have desktops and don't travel much and when we do i usually bring my ipad. we just have texting added only to our phone.

Like to spend $150 or less if possible.
  • Toshiba Thrive.. It looks awesome. I was going to buy one of these before I got my laptop. It has real usb port where he can plug in a real keyboard and mouse...2 cameras..and more. They have reviews on youtube on it. I think I still might get one next year sometime.

The tablet itself is often less important than the operating system on it. Basically there's four of those: Android, iOS (Apple), Windows or Blackberry's. If you don't want to spend more than 150 dollar, it doesn't really matter which one you buy, as they'll all be about the same. Simply go to the store and find out which one you like to hold best, or looks best to you. The only thing in the end determining whether it's easy to use is the operating system. In which case I would suggest android to you. iOS is very easy, but too expensive. Android is very good for me and can also be found on lower end tablets.

Another vote for Android here. I love my Motorola Xoom. The Ipads are slick and nice, but come at the price of vendor lock in, whereas Android is more open.

Thanks for all your help, I paid a bit more and got a Kindle fire. That was it will be real easy for him to check out books from the library on it.
