Cup size?

When a recipe calls for a cup (of oats for example) what is the actual size?
Which cup could i use? I would much rather prefer Grams to make it easier :- /

    It's one measuring cup. Just fill it to the 1 cup line and that's a serving.

    Cups are a US measurement, i'm in the UK and I had to buy a special set of measuring cups for US recipes.

    One cup is 8 ounces. You can find ounces/grams conversion calculators online... 8 ounces = 226.796 g.

    I have to admit, when I read the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about buying bras... : )

    one cup as in a measuring cup marked one cup.... you fill it to the one cup mark......liquid, one cup is 8 ounces...

    It must be a US thing.... I have never seen a measuring cup :frown:

    I just guesstimate how much a 'cup' is by whether I think it would fit in an actual cup.... or I search for an option that is in grams! :smile:

    As far as I know 1 cup is 250 grams.. Google it if you're not sure though

    One cup is a measure of VOLUME which is 8 FLUID OUNCES! This is NOT the same as 8 ounces of mass, which is what you converted to grams. NO NO NO!

    One cup is the equivalent of 236.5882 milliliters (or millilitres depending on how you prefer to spell it).

    Yeah I don't think we get it here in the UK. I have the typical measuring jug they sell here and it goes by Litres.

    Can't convert to grams as it's volume. 1 cut of oats is not the same weight as 1 cup of water...

    The weight of a cup full of anything will depend on what the cup contains.

    I think you'd need a scale to find out grams. A cup measures volume not weight.

    A cup is a US measure. It means 250ml - a volume measurement, not a weight one. The weight varies depending on what you're measuring. You can buy standard cups for measuring, but finding a mug in the cupboard which holds 250mls is as good.

    I live in France but I bought some kind of Pyrex brand glass measuring cup (it looks like a pint glass) that has centiliters and cups on it, which is very convenient. Maybe you could find one of those?

    For the uk folk here - Tesco sell a small measuring jug that also has "cup" and "half cup" measurements on it. I find this helful when estimating soup measurements etc. Hope that helps
