Stop hating on people at the gym! *RANT*

I have heard entirely too many people pissing on the "new years resolvers" at the gym. Shut the hell up! If anything you should be supportive because you all know how hard it is to lose weight and how hard it is to start off in the gym, worrying about people judging you! You are not all high and mighty because you decided to change your life some other day than January 1st.

How do you know they didn't transfer gyms? How do you know they don't have a home gym and joined for classes? How do you know they didn't just decide to go to the gym after months of weight loss and dieting to refine their results? How do you know they haven't reached their goal and are just there to tone?

You are in the gym, they are in the gym, and you're both there with the same purpose. Keep your thoughts to your damn self and do that you're there to do.

  • Honestly, thank you for this.

I've gained approximately 20lbs in the last 3 years and I am no stranger to the gym...but of course because I'm bigger and less athletic than *I* used to be, I get really self-concious about going back into the gym and *thinking* people are making judgmental statements about me while I try to get back into shape.

I joined this website because I was looking for other people I can talk to about diet/exercise and perhaps relate on some level with others about my anxiety regarding going to the gym and not being at my "best". I was really disgusted when I read all of the "hilarious" rants about people joining the gym. Oh well, to each their own I guess.

Also, you know what? While the majority of people don't "keep" their New Year's Resolution, there's always a couple who do, and you have NO idea who those people are...so no reason to treat everyone as if they're going to fail...treat them all as if they're going to be successful.

Very true! But in their defense...I think they just say this because the gyms are generally more crowded the first few months of the year....making it even harder to get on a machine, squat rack, bench, or cardio machines. It's the people who aren't serious about working out that irritate the rest of us....and take up space at the gym.

AGREED! The people at the gym the first of the year ARE serious about it....at that moment they are no different than those that frequent it. Sometimes people don't stick with it, sometimes they do. Maybe after a few weeks of seeing how crowded it is, or the classes don't fit their schedule they realize they can get a kick *kitten* workout at home. I never judge someone that is working toward a goal, regardless if it's for 2 yrs, 2 months, 2 weeks or 2 days. Bottom line is BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS!

I'm more irritated with the slags who go to the gym in pearls to suck on a lolly and sit on the hip abductor machine, eyeing the men using free weights, than the girl sweating up a storm on the elliptical. It's people who down everyone who is there, regardless of the time of year. I get it, it's more crowded, but people succeed at New Years resolutions and it's easier when people aren't being rude.

Case in point: I was checking out a gym near my house yesterday and over heard the exact following statement between an employee and a regular member: "I can't wait until all the fatties fail with their New years ****. I'm tired of seeing all the fat slobs here taking up my machines." The employee agreed. I walked over to management and told them point blank that I refuse to pay money to their gym if even their employees aren't promoting a positive atmosphere.

    I'm a greeter; not a hater!
I'm a member of Jazzercise and have been a long time. When we get a someone new I try to say Hi. Just a simple, "hi, are you new? Sometimes they want to talk a bit and sometimes I get the "leave me alone" vibe.
Either way, someone took the time to greet me when I was new and it was the reason I made it through the early days when I was uncoordinated and self-conscious.

You're the one that is missing the point. I'm doing week-long trial workouts at two separate gyms in my town. I'm starting now because I got a Christmas bonus. I lift at home and walk at home.

Yes, let's spew some venom at them, the *kitten*! :indifferent:

    Why do you care?

There are plenty of folks that are long-time gym goers that do this. Who cares, though? Is it impeding your workout somehow?

I think if you have the time to notice when a new person is in the gym...you aren't serious about working out. I've been going to the same gym for 3-4 years and I still don't know who all the "regulars" are and which people have just joined. To me it doesn't matter either way. Some of you are right, there are "regulars" who just go to chat, socialize, hook up, and take up space. So I'm not knocking all those that are just starting out...it motivates me to see someone stick with their goal and have dramatic results.

You don't know a damn thing about me but I bet you're one of the f*ckers that would hate on me if I, GOD FORBID, was using your favorite in-the-back elliptical.

Me too. My gym used to have two locations and one of them closed. I'm using this time of year with all of the great New Year's welcome deals and trial memberships to shop around for a new gym. I'm sure people are thinking that I'm one of those "New Year's Fatties" and that's fine. I'd dare someone to say it to my face, though. I'll break out the sweet kickboxing moves I learned at my old gym real fast.

It is annoying when the 1st of the year pours in new members, but you don't have to be rude about it. If you're so dedicated, why don't you have your own equipment at home to work with? No reason to be mean to people just trying to lose weight. Like I said, it's ok to be annoyed, but no reason to look down upon them.

Wow....y'all are taking it way to seriously....Sit back and laugh. Yes...there are New Years Resolutioners...it's a fact, the gym gets packed. Actually, I could probably be labeled one...Although I will be a Mid-year resolutioner and probably a fall resolutioner. It's only offensive if you are looking for ways to be offended.

On the other hand, if I went to the gym everyday, I certainly wouldn't be looking forward to the first of the year and the crowds either. I'd want to beat my feet and get my workout done like I get to for the other 10 months of the year. There are 2 sides to every story.

If something little like poking jokes at folks over New Years Resolutions is going to ruffle feathers this HIGH, then this is going to be a long, long, journey. I personally prefer to smile, laugh, cut up and right now....stand in line waiting for the elliptical.

I for one do not have a problem with New Year's Resolutions to an extent. I go to the gym all the time. I know and recognize most of those who are there often. During New Years....YES it sucks cause it gets crowded. Being there as often as I am I support these people but it's those that are done after that first month when the gym clears out.

I support those that continue this resolution, not those who say yeah im gonna go every day and then boom they are gone. It's disappointing and they need to find something that works for them. I feel they are the same people every year that start the gym then leave.

Sometimes people come up to me and ask about an exercise I was doing -- those I LOVE! they want to learn!

oh you mean the "tourists" - the large numbers of folks that certainly mean well with their new years resolutions but who lack the focus and resolve to make permanent life changes.

don't deny that they exist. My gym is crawling with them. In 3 months 75% of them will be gone and ones who remain... well they're not "tourists".

I wonder what the actual stats are on gym memberships in the January and then comparing it to say, March.

PS. don't be so concerned about people hating on you. If you're at the gym for the right reasons (which I'm assuming you are) then you shouldn't give a flying fart what anyone thinks about you while you sweat it out.

Same here. Or if I want one of the two elliptical and there are two chicks in booty shorts on level zero for 3 minutes giggling and talking. I don't care what the hell someone's resolution was if they are being dumb at the gym and it gets in the way of my exercise than I'm mad.

If the resolutioner can stick with it awesome, I'm really happy for them more power to them.

If you are at the gym working out and sticking to it, you have my total support.

If you and 1000 others like you have wandered into the gym because of the magical date January 1st, and you are half assing the machines, talking on your phone, texting, whatever... while leisurally strolling about on it and taking up space, you can do that outside too and let those that really use the machine the chance to do so.

I can't really get into the gym during January because there are amusement-park level lines on each machine and you have a 30 minute max time limit. I prefer running outside though, so the only time this affects me is when I need to do my strength training. So having to stand in line for 30 minutes to an hour to wait on people half-assing a "workout" while they are texting/talking on their phone is unacceptable to me.

If you're going to the gym, go and workout for real... not show up for 3 weeks a year enmasse and then head on back to the couch to try again in 2013...

If the NYR's weren't allowed to do curls or bench press, there would be A LOT of people just standing around. Tell these NYR loosers to squat ATG and dead-lift atleast 2 plate and then i'll think about being nice to them.

I'm annoyed at the influx of inconsiderate jerks in my gym that suddenly started. Leaving machines sweaty, peeing all over the toilet seats, leaving soiled towels EVERYWHERE, having no respect for spatial awareness in classes. We're not wild animals, people.

I know someone whose new year's resolution was to lose 100lbs and she did so in a year's time. She had never been to the gym before and you're right she had no clue what to do, but she figured it out and did it. Because of people like her people like me see that it is possible to reach your goals! By the way she is really "toned" now too:)
