I keep reading about people wanting to "suppress their hunger." Why would you do that? If you body is telling you it's hungry then i feel like you should be eating. Not a cheeseburger, obviously, but a low calorie healthy snack. What's the obsession with wanting to suppress your hunger/appetite??

You are absolutely correct. But when you have been eating without thought for a long time and have gotten to the obese stage (been there, and done that), you often have lost connection with your hunger and mistake alot of other things for it (boredom, habit, thirst, stress). So reconnecting with hunger is tough.

*applause* Thank you! Someone who gets it! :) If your stomach is empty and you're actually hungry, eat food. Now, if it's cravings you want to suppress, that's one thing, but so many people around here try to "suppress" their hunger when their stomachs are growling. I don't get it.

    LOL... awesome...
  • Very often, we aren't even hungry. It's just thirst. However, as people who've been living as addicts and giving in the slightest pang, it is no wonder that we need to retrain ourselves. As addicts, we have to recover from our addiction-food. Just because we are "Jonesing" doesn't mean we actually need to eat. We need reprogramming, and by suppressing what our brains are saying is hunger, we are doing that. Our brains aren't always our friends....

If I ate when I was hungry, I'd be fat as hell.
  • good point....Also we often mistake dehydration for hunger pains....so drinking enough water will also help hunger pains!

Most people do things while they eat, and don't realize how much they've eaten. If you're bored, your brain can trick you into thinking your hungry. When that happens, I just swig a **** load of water an it goes away. This might not help, but its an opinion

For me I confuse true hunger with thirst sometimes, or I'll feel hungry from smelling something appetizing. And sometimes I feel hungry AFTER I've eaten. So mostly I try to suppress *that* hunger. I'm not trying to suppress *real* hunger :)

But I'll tell ya I've seen some straaange things on this site. :frown: I'll occasionally get friend requests from super skinny teenagers, with users like "dyingtobethin" and such. just saying.

if I ate every single time I felt hungry I would be morbidly obese. (no joke). And no, it is not because of thirst I stay hydrated. and it is definitely not boredom because I am constantly running around the house with my 1 year old or running around to the grocery store or working out. You may feel if you are hungry then eat but there is some of us who (as frugalmomsroc) saids need retraining. Because every time I was hungry I would eat and thats why it got me to where I am at today.

So I get to stay looking the way I do!

If I know that I have eaten and drunk enough for the day, and I still feel hungry, I just tell my body what it can do with its so-called "hunger"

If I have eaten well, it's not real hunger and if I distract myself it goes away again.
