would help to know where you are located - since a lot of gyms are not national chains.

Maybe check in to your local parks & rec department. Even if they don't have a gym, they probably have fitness classes you could look in to.

If money's tight, you don't really need a gym. Get started with lots of walking a set of handweights.

Money is tight in my family too. I do all of my exercise from home. I saved up for an exercise bike for $200, so that was my big expense. But I do DVDs half the time. I started with DVDs at the library. Also, if you have netflix, there are workouts on there. I'd start with some 3 lb hand weights, which you should be able to get for about $8 (?), and do some DVDs. :D
I did a Leslie Sansone Walk at home DVD and thought it was good for beginners. And I love Jillian Michaels DVDs and kickboxing DVDs.
    Good luck! :)

I would suggest doing what I did recently - google fitness centers in your area and check out their webpages. if you have time, you can even visit 2 or 3, ask for tours and talk to them about pricing.

To me, the local family owned place was much more impressive - sure they didn't have all the shiny colorful equipment that some place like Planet Fitness has but they actually had pricing (punch card membership) for someone like me who will only be gonig once or twice per week (I go to a gym in my office Mon-Fri) and had more options - classes, pool, hot tub, sauna. AND they gave me my first visit for free!

Check the Planet Fitness website for specials in your area. They didn't impress me but they do tend to be fairly reasonable price-wise compared to other facilities. The one good thing about PF is that they usually have an in home personal trainer who will meet with you to go through the strength machines and help set up a program for you - for free.

If you really do want a GYM, see if there is a Workout Anytime in your area. One just opened here and it's like $70 to sign up and just $15 per month. :-)
  • There is also the YMCA where you can get a scholarship based on income.

^^This plus the dvds somebody else mentioned.

I hate the gym. It can be almost a distraction if you're just starting out. Right now it's crowded and hard to get the help and support you need. A lot of people on here start with jillian 30 day shred. I found that one a little much so I started with Jillian's shred it with weights. That, plus walking, is the best place in the world.

You don't necessarily need a gym especially if money is an issue. Do you have cable? Most cable companies have a free on-demand channel with workouts that you could do at home. Or get DVDs at the library.

Buy a set of resistance bands to use on your upper body. For you lower body, just do body weight squats and lunges and after some time passes, buy some light dumbbell weights and do squats and lunges with those. Heck, you don't even need dumbbells if you are just starting out. Get the heaviest book in your house and use that for weights. For cardio, you have the great outdoors for walking and running.

As you increase your proficiency with your workouts, then consider a gym.
