Just curious, what kind of suit do you wear when you swim laps? A couple months ago, I stared swimming mornings with a friend. I have usually worn boardshorts. She gave me a pair of speedos for Christmas. Now i know boardshorts aren't the best for swimming, but I don't know wearing speedos. I am supposed to meet her at the pool tomorrow morning.

    Wear the speedos!
  • I don't think I will be much help on this issue as I wear a bikini ( terrible sight, but I do keep a towel round me to the last minute)
But wear what you feel most comfortable in x

Wear the speedos but also a robe if you are like me and think they look too girlie-man.
In the water you'll feel great, but I would never - I MEAN NEVER be seen walking around in those, and that's assuming I reach my goals by summer.

I wear jammers. They're the same material as "speedos" but they longer, going down to your mid thighs.

    either wear speedos or jammers
I am/was a lifeguard and also used to swim competitively, nothing screams newbie more than wearing board shorts to swim laps (no offense) not too mention allllllll the extra drag the loose suits create and since (i assume) you are not training for a race, the extra drag is not needed

That's really similar to what she's been telling me. I think i may actually wear them tomorrow...
  • I am an Aquatics Director. I mostly see people wearing speedos or jammers when they are swimming laps for exercise. I know that people think that they look silly but ultimately, you look silly when you are trying to move through the water with board shorts that have a lot of rag and 9 times out of 10, are waaaay too big. I would recommend jammers which are mid quad or a speedo. And guess what? No one can actually see what you are wearing when you are in the water :) Hope this helps.

I prefer seeing men at the pool in their jammers, but it seems to me, the older the male is the smaller the Speedo becomes...and they never hurry up into the pool..hahaha

Look at you!!! You would give the female swimmers a treat if you wore speedos. Most guys where I swim wear them, so I am sure you will be in good company!

So I wore the speedo this morning. They are easier to swim in. I don't think i grossed anyone out either, at least i think so.....

Would you go running in Doc Martens?

Would you wear slacks and tie on a long bike ride?

Do you get on the elliptical machine in coveralls?

Wearing baggy shorts for lap swimming is just as silly. Tight fitting shorts, be they Briefs or Jammers are the appropriate attire for swimming laps.

I prefer Jammers just because for the 'modesty' advantages.

If you buy another pair, I suggest asking for durable nylon - they last a LOT longer.

Of course you wouldn't have. You need to see where I swim. They have an aqua jogging group and I kid you not, most of them have stomachs down to their knees. It's like swimming in a tsunami!

Oh goodness. Stomach down to their knees, that can't be a good sight. Hopefully, that's just one group :)

The briefs I was given do fit, but modest isn't a word I would use to describe them. I swim three days a week, maybe i'll switch to jammers in a couple months

^^ Those look to be a similar size to what i have
  • I swim for my High School swim team. We wear Speedo Jammers, sorta like compression shorts. The regular Speedo is also an option, but I don't want to really go that route yet. If you're wanting to get a better work out I would suggest wearing a pair of Jammers, and wear swimming trunks/drag suit over those, and wear a cut off shirt (the bigger the cuts on the side, the better) to help add drag. I wouldn't suggest wearing a swim cap either unless your hair is effected by chlorine a lot.

    I hope it helps!
