HI just found this site and made the decision to join , i am happily married mother of 4 kids - 23-15 yrs of age.
when i was 22 i was treated with radioactive iodine for a serious over active thyroid problem. that i had since i was 11 yrs old. the doctors destroyed most of my thyroid and just enough of my thyroid was left working to keep me healthy.

I had always been on the thin side even with a treated thyroid, i had 4 kids from 1988- 1996 and was healthy and was able to lose weight after each pregnancy.. .- so at 44 i hit a wall and my body went crash.. my thyroid stopped working.. now at 48 and i have gained 40 lbs in the last 4 years .

I now have a under active thyroid and my metabolism basically went to sleep , i couldnt think ,slept all the time, forgot things fatigued ,brain fog..no matter how much walking i did i couldn't lose a pound. 20,000 steps - on pedometer n no weight loss..- it was a night mare especially the weight gain which i had never had a problem with... Dr prescribed synthroid which made the weight gain worse and it made every joint in my body ache

- i finally had enough of the medication and demanded that i be prescribed a natural alternative.. within 2 days of taking the natural thyroid hormone the fatigue and joint pain disappeared..
so now i am slowly working my way back to start losing some weight.. any support friends would be appreciated - thank you and take care everyone

Hi newbie tiyatela, I am Clare and I live in New Zealand.

I also have (treated) low thyroid levels (was too high when I was young) and have been taking thyroxin for years. In NZ we have levothyroxin in 2 brandnames, if one brand does not suit the other probably will.

I can identify with your weight problem and the lethargy you have had to overcome. Also I have insulin resistance from being overweight: food energy does not get into the cells properly AND... any high GI carbs go straight to fat. It's a great life isn't it.

Once your thyroxin levels are correct (within the middle- to-upper-half of the normal range works for me) you will feel able bodied again. The forgetfulness and fuzzy thinking will get better and you will be able to move around and respond quickly again.Your alertness, mental drive and happiness balance will also improve. I am sorry yr doctor took so long to get you on track.

I have been obese since tonsils out age 7. I find it very difficult to lose weight, presumably it's the insulin thing, and any help will be gratefully received. It would be great to keep track with you so we can compare notes if you would like to.

Last year I lost 15 kg with a meal replacement diet. That gave me a boost. I have managed to keep in control and now I want to use a calorie controlled Glycaemic Index style of diet so that simple starches are avoided, to see if that will work.

Best wishes to you as you clear away the fog. I hope we both do well. Cheers, Clare

hey I'm in canada too with thyroid problems!
I'm down to half a thyroid, and that half that I have left now has a small tumor, so I'll lost that eventually too. I feel your pain! I had my first "nodule" when I was only 20, it was liquid and could be drained, then at 23 I had a solid calcified tumor (hence the losing half my thyroid thing) and now i have a small solid mass at 27 (it's been there for over a year though)
anyway enough rambling about that, welcome! and you are not alone!
  • Hi, I also have thyroid issues (in addition to PCOS) and struggling to lose weight. I get frustrated often. I will be adding people who know what I am going through. We can all share tips we learn along the way as we motivate each other! Please add me!
