I'm just curious, does anyone know if egg yolks are really that bad for you? I have a friend who is healthy telling me to eat only the egg whites. I've read some things online that there are important nutrients in the yolk. Does anyone know the truth? Thanks!

It's debatable. It's high in cholestrol and fat, sure, but I've read it contains the 'good' sort of fat our bodies need. Plus it tastes pretty good. :D I think if you're on an otherwise healthy diet, eggs-yolk and all-can be included in that.

It has a lot of nutrition in the yolk. I usually will just eat the whole egg unless I'm ready needing to lower my calories. But 70 for a large egg isn't terrible at all.

Do you have a cholesterol problem?

If not, go whole hog. Ooops I mean whole egg.

I just do not find the whites tasty. I'd rather go without.

If you need less fat, more protein, then mix in 1 yolk for every 2 or 3 whites.

I do about two whites and one whole egg for scrambled eggs. I only eat the whites for hardboiled eggs (but that's because the yellow part tastes gross to me when it's hardboiled). Otherwise, I eat the whole egg.

The yellow part does contain fat and cholesterol, but it has good fats, and it does have protein (I think about 3 grams or so).

I follow the moderation rule. :)

Concur. I eat the yolk about 60-70% of the time. There are pluses and minuses to the yolk but I disagree with not eating them at all. I think moderation is the key here.
  • Ellie krieger from Healthy Appetite says that there is alot of nutrition in the yolks so she splits the yolk and the whites. For instance if you are having two eggs make 1 with the whole egg and the other with egg white only. Then you still get the good nutrition but a lot less fat and calories.

The only time the yolk is bad for you, is if the yolk is the only part of the egg you eat. Last year I had 3 eggs every single day and I'm perfectly healthy. I only stopped eating them because I got tired of them.

I eat 2-3 whole eggs each day and have never had any health issues or bad cholesterol numbers because of it. Love the yolks, not as fond of the whites, but eat the whole egg because the nutrition in both parts are good for you.

If you don’t include the yolk, you’re cutting out half the protein, 90% of the calcium, 93% of the iron, 96% of the B6, 95% of the folate, 91% of the B12, and all of the carotenoids, DHA (essential fatty acid), and vitamins A, E, D, and K!

And for what? To eliminate the cholesterol and 4 grams of fat? Please. Eat the yolk.

The most recent studies show that regular consumption of eggs does not correlate with an increased chance of high cholesterol or heart disease. It’s now known that actual cholesterol in food is not the biggest contributor to high cholesterol. Actually, trans fats, which you find in most processed foods, have a much bigger effect on blood cholesterol levels.
