So when I first started mfp for the second time december 1st I used my boyfriends scale, I had also gone to the dr. shortly before so I thought my start weight was pretty accurate. However, he discovered that his scale was actually not correct and would weigh him 10 pounds lighter. So I was only going to weigh myself once a month otherwise I start becoming crazy and obsessive, so I got on his scale and all month I kept seeing the number go down but he purchased a new scale last weekend which I got on and I was 10 pounds heavier. I was discouraged, at first I figured as long as I used the same scale and saw the number go down at least I knew I was losing but he threw the dang scale out, I don't necessarily want to just subtract 10 from the current scale, so now what do I do? Now I'm thinking I might have even started 10 pounds heavier....anyone with any experience or suggestions?

My old scale was weighing in 10 pounds heavier. I knew it in my head but didnt want to admit it to myself, then before I knew it I had gained 10 pounds because I had a false sence of security on my faulty scale. So now I have an extra 10 pounds to lose on top of what I origionally thought. Advise is take the new weight measurment and go from there. I know its dicouraging but atleast you wont be cheating yourself
  • No matter what the number on the scale says, you have lost 10 pounds and that is something to be proud of!!! I would just log what your weight is on the new scale and consider your start weight 10 pounds heavier. Way to go on losing 10 pounds! That's fabulous.

Just keep going! Don't let the number on the scale get you down!

Set your number to where the new scale says and take a break from weighing yourself for a week or two. Eat healthy and work your butt off! After two weeks, you should seem at least a little progress in the right direction. Then just go from there.

Use something other than that number on the scale as your motivation too. I find it helpful to find an outfit I want to fit into and keep it where I can see it every time I walk in the closet. I have a old Chinese style dress I used to be able to wear that I want to be able to fit into again.
If you don't have anything, maybe just buy one dress or a pair of pant a couple sizes smaller (nothing too drastic!) and aim for that.

as long as you use the same scales ALL THE TIME, at least you will know how much weight you have lost/gained with some sort of consistency. Scales can vary readings from +/- 10-15 lbs even.

If scales are important to you, it might be an idea to buy a set and just use those and ONLY those :-)
  • Can you change your start weight to be 10 pounds higher? Then the weight you have lost will still be visible on your ticker. Don't let it get you down, no matter where you started you have still lost weight and that is something to be proud of.
  • Hate the scale :)). I will go only once a week and update on my profile every Sunday :))
