work out with body modifications....

I have a sternum implant (staple) and it makes it harder when doing upper body workouts. Its still healing (can take up to a year) and limits my range of motion with my arm. I can't pull my elbows behind me (or pretty much past my chest). I can't stretch my arms out both ways at the same time... can't do anything that opens the chest area without risking retearing the skin around the staple. Any suggests?

I would suggest staying away from upper body entirely. That sounds like it would be extremely painful to tear. Maybe just try the treadmill, elliptical, stairmaster? Things that only involve lower body.0

Maybe just try dumbells (do curls?) and see if that bothers you?0

Can you do push ups and pull ups? it's all you need to do to keep your upper body conditioned until you heal.0

I can do a semi push up as long as I don't go all the way down where my elbows go behind me0 -
That'll work, add in some bicep curls, some tricep extensions, they should both be ok, and even some bodyweight pull ups. youplace yourself underneath a bar set at hip level, grab the bar, and pull up....thinking that wouldn't be a problem,. You mentioned you can do lateral raises, so you're hitting your shoulders....you're good to go.
But really, pull ups and pushups will suffice.

check out bodybuilding.com they have a ton of exercises on there, and if there's something that won't work for you, google the targeted muscle group to see if there's alternatives.0
