Jogging

This year, I've decided to get serious about losing weight. I am 5' and weigh 140 lbs. I started jogging on Tuesday - warm up for 5 mins, jog for 40, cool down for 5. I am only jogging at 4.2mph with no incline right now, but I'm hoping that as I continue I will be able to do more. I did the same on Wed, Thur, and Fri.

I've heard several comments like, "Jogging is just a waste of time," "You won't lose anything jogging." I guess I just need to hear from some of you if you've had success jogging.

I'm also trying to stick to a 1200 calorie diet and recording it on MFP. Thank you!

*Also, what shoes would you recommend? I'm currently wearing Reebok Run Tones but they're getting worn down, time for new ones.

    1) You should be eating more than 1200 if you are exercising regularly
    2) Of course you can lose weight jogging
    3) What I like about jogging, is that it gives you fitness goals separate from weight loss goals. So even though I am trying to lose weight, I am working on running faster and longer. It gives me more motivation to go to the gym.
    4) Be careful you don't do too much to fast. Just running at 4.2 for 40 minutes sounds like too much for someone not used to it. Try running intervils, and make sure your heart rate doesn't get too high.

I don't know enough about running shoes to reccommend a pair. I just went to a running store and the clerk there helped me. I paid $90 and so far so good (but I didn't have any problems running on my $20 dollar payless shoes - I just didn't want to wait til those cheap shoes gave me an injury to get shoes made for running)

I feel like when I jog I'm going the same speed as when I walk, but it doesn't matter because it's all about getting that heart rate up and keeping it there.

If you want confirmation about losing weight and jogging, get a cheap heart rate monitor and look at the calories you are burning in those 40 minutes! A monitor will also allow you to keep your heart rate in check, and make sure you're not working yourself too hard, though I think if you were you wouldn't be able to do it for 40 minutes at a time anyway!

Shoes wise, I'm wearing a £20 pair of reebok something-or-others with inserts cause I have wierd feet and can't afford to spend anymore on shoes, but they are fine and I've had them 4-5 months now.

Hi, I've been running for a couple of years now and although I'm by no means fast I've managed to increase my speed and distance over that time. By the way I'm a tad shorter than you and my little legs do go quicker than I thought they would when I started out! Good luck with your training, as you feel comfortable with what you are doing try and increase your speed up a little, even if you have to drop it back down again that will all help

I really do recommend going and having your gait analysed in a specialist running store to find the shoes most suitable for you, you'll be amazed at how much more comfortable your shoes can make to you

Are the people who are telling you that you can't lose weight jogging, jogging? Let me guess - NO! Don't listen to them - maybe they're jealous??? Just continue to do it and prove them wrong. Then you can tell them, "gee, that's odd, I lost 10lbs by jogging".

I also love to Walk/Jog. Apart from other machines, the treadmill you can set the speed and you must keep it up or fly off LOL. I like that fact that the treadmill actually pushes me to accomplish my goal. Keep up the good work and enjoy !

Hey, I've been jogging/running for about 6 months now. Its been a big contributer to my weight loss. If you have a smart phone, try downloading cardiotrainer. It will log your run with the GPS so you can see your progress.

On the trainer front, a friend recmmended sofsole airr. I bought a pair and they have completely revitalised my trainers, feels like running in my slippers, but without the slop, if you know what I mean. They cost about £20 but are worth it. My friend is a serious runner and she was looking for a top range running shoe but was persuaded to buy a £50 pair and the soles and swear by them.
