All day yesterday i ate healthy and excercised, but when i woke up this morning and weighed myself like i always do i had gained a pound! My sister is always saying that your weight fluctuates every day but my weight always stays pretty solid every day unless i have lost weight. So if anyone has any insight on what the reason for it is that would be great.

Also I am new to MFP and i would love to make a few new friends on here :) I've seen a lot of inspiring people on here but i feel like i would freak strangers out if i sent them a friend request but add me and i will be there to support you throughout your journey :)

This happens to me after I have been running, however, it goes back down again.

All I could put it down to is fluid around the muscles after they have been worked out.
  • I thought of that also, hopefully it's just fluids

I've had the same issue since Christmas weekend. I track my calories closely and wear a Bodybugg to see how much calories I am burning each day to be a ble to stay in a caloric deficit but I still gained a few lbs. Very frustrating. The good news is that this morning I weighed in and got back down to my lowest weight before the holidays so I feel like I am back on track again. I think that something about the holiday eating and emotions triggers a physiological response to keep weight on. Probably due to stress. Now that that is over I am back on track.

Don't worry, keep on doing what worked in the past and your body will eventually respond. It works if you work it! :)

Unless you ate 3500 calories over your TDEE yesterday, it's fluid retention, either from your muscles repairing themselves after working too hard, or from sodium, etc. Or maybe you need to poop. Don't worry about it. If you're going to weigh every day, you need to look at overall trends instead of the actual day-to-day changes.

weight does fluctuate all day everyday, a weight gain overnight usually is not fat unless you REALLY tried for that 3500calories, haha, add me if you like

My advice is to stop weighing yourself everyday. Getting on the scale every morning and seeing a fluctuation up like you did will eventually be detrimental to your weight loss. Everybody's weight fluctuates naturally everyday. Try weighing yourself once a week on the same day at the same time of day--you're more likely to see a consistent loss if you've been eating right and exercising all week. Also, if your exercise was strenuous at all, you may possibly have gained some weight because of your body retaining water to repair your muscles. Another problem might be you had too much sodium or not enough water. Don't get discouraged over one day, keep your healthy routine going and in the next couple weeks you'll most likely see a difference.

    Good luck!

I just got back to 30 Day Shred after an injury. I ate good for three days, did 30DS for three days, and I gained 1.5 pounds. But I wouldn't stress, because it's muscle fluid retention, or food retention, or you had too much sodium and are holding a ton of water.... or a bunch of those combined. You'll be fine!

Also, if you friend request someone maybe just add in a message as to why? I don't get freaked out if I meet someone similar in the forum and they send a message and request. :-)

You can add me if you want. Good luck!

Did you only "work hard" for that one day? You're probably just recovering. Don't worry about daily weight too much and focus on longer term goals. If you NEED to weigh every day, give yourself a range, not a single number, that you will accept to see on the scale. 4-5 lbs would be reasonable.
  • Thank you so much everyone for your suggestions, and i don't think its a high amount of sodium or too many calories this whole week i have been very careful about what i eat. i actually find it pretty hard for me to eat over 900 calories. And i try not to weigh myself everyday but its just become such a habit I've lost 20 pounds since september and its just very exciting to me to wake up everyday and see the progress you've made

900 calories isn't enough, just for the record. It's a fast track to killing your metabolism. I would recommend increasing that gradually to no less than your BMR. If you're unsure what your BMR is, you can click the "Tools" tab and you'll get MFP's estimate for it.

Same thing happens to me. After I exercise, I always seem to gain a pound or 2. It takes a couple of days for it to level out and reflect a loss. Sometimes I have to stop exercising for 3 days or so to see the loss, I guess its my body recovering. Like others have said, focus on a weekly goal. Don't let the daily numbers get to you. Even with out exercise, hormones and water fluctuating in your body will cause you got go up and down throughout the week.

I have to second the person who said 900 calories is not enough. You're going to KILL your metabolism. And it's not enough calories for your vital organs to function properly. You really must eat at least 1200 calories a day.

Hard exercise causes water retention because it takes water to help rebuild muscle and store glycogen.

  • I know only 900 calories is not good for you when it comes to eating i always used to think less is more, i used to eat about only 500 calories a day and its hard to break the habit i've been just gradually increasing how much i eat i will try to make it to 1,200 today! :)

Good on you. :) Increasing gradually is the way to go. Also, look for more calorie-dense foods like peanut butter. Less filling, more fuel for your body.
