Weight Loss and "The Pill"

I was wondering if anyone (probably ladies, considering the nature of the topic) would have any information on trying to lose weight while being on birth control.

I've tried many times before to start losing weight, but didn't experience very much results and always ended up quitting and my doctor said it's probably due to the pill. Because of this, he warned that it may be harder than usual to lose weight and/or keep it off if I do. I've changed prescriptions about three times now.

I'm wondering if anyone here is on BC, what BC you are on and how successful you've been at losing weight and maybe what you do to lose???

Thanks in advance!!!

I asked the same question to my doctor a few years ago and she seemed to act like it was more of an excuse than anything. She told me that on average a woman gains about a pound a year...with or without birth control and we all need to exercise to stay in shape. Now I don't know if this is true or not but I have friends who are on bc and friends who are not and weight gain does not seem to discriminate!!! I, personally, cannot say that any of my weight gain had come from being on the pill.

This could just be from the pill I am on...I did have a friend who took a bc shot and I believe a side effect was weight gain...so she stopped!

Hope that helps...I'd like to hear other ladies experiences!

I had a similar problem on the pill . .. always felt bloated and gaining weight. I went off it for a month . . . BE CAREFUL!! If your a baby maker like me :grumble:
I just started Nuva Ring and feel fine, no mood swings, acne, bloating, or weight gain yet *** knock on wood. Mind you its only been a week.
Your family Dr. can give you a month trial . . . you insert it for 3 weeks and take it out for 1. I was taken back by the insertion part but seriously don't feel a thing, neither does my man!

I'm not going to say that the pill has nothing to do with weightloss because I'm no doctor, and other pills could have different results than the one I am one. BUT, I will say when we don't succeed at something, it is easy to blame something else, like I couldn't lose the weight because of my BC.

A couple years ago I became determined to lose weight and joined a gym and worked out faithfully three mornings a week for about six weeks. All that ever happaned was I yo-yo'd between the same 3 and 4 pounds....lose two, gain one, lose three gain four, etc.

I wasn't really watching what I ate, but I figured not eating right and exercisinig HAD to be better than not eating right and not exercising... right? Wrong....subconsciously I probably did eat more, assuminig I could afford it since I went to the gym. So all that time I concluded that I am just one of those people that has a hard time losinig weight.

It wasn't until I joined here and started counting calories and working out regularly that I discovered, I CAN lose weight. So yeah, I'm sure there are medecines that can make it more difficult, but you also have to look at your methods and how dedicated you are and be honest with yourself on just how much your eating. Sure you had a salad for lunch but what about the cookies and pop and snacks you had between that and dinner? A lot of peple selectively forget about those things. We also tend to think, I just took the stairs two flights instead of the elevator, I deserve that piece of cake.....except there is no way taking two flights of stairs will work off a piece of cake. That's what I love about this site, it truly holds you accountable for everything you do and eat, and the results show.
Now that I count my calories, it really amazes me to know how much I used to eat before, all the while thinking I was doing pretty well.

I too struggle with this. I went off the Pill in January and have been successful with losing. I just went back on this week and can already feel my body chemistry changing and can tell it will be hard to shed my last 5-10lbs. My biggest fear is gaining back the weight I've lost before my wedding on June 28th! I am determined to not gain weight on the Pill this time, and even lose weight! I'm just going to have to work twice as hard. I have endometriosis and can only last 3-4 months off the pill before needed to control my periods again. I feel great off the pill, with exception to those 3-7 days of PAIN! Oh how I wish I could live without BC! :frown:

I too would appreciate any advice/success stories women have had with losing weight on the Pill. Thank you much!

    Hi!

I recently stopped taking the pill because in a week I gained a little over 5 pounds. I am a runner, count calories, drink my water etc.

I discussed it with my doctor and he said that the weight gain is definitely NOT from my lifestyle and eating habits. The particular pill I was on caused water retention and bloating for me. It also increased hunger which I was able to fight, but was miserable doing it. He took me off the pill. I also had TONS of other side effects that helped us make the descision. Everyone is differnet though. What works for one, might not work for the other. The best bet is to talk with your doc and find the best course of action for yourself!

    Good luck!!

I can honestly say i've been on the pill since October last year... and the only place i have put weight on is on my boobs.. went from a 34B to 34D  everything else fits the same.. so i suppose it was a free boob job, but to be honest it can go different ways for women..
Yes loosing weight hasnt been as easy.. but you just gotta stick with it! i have only gained weight in one area so im not overly fussed!

I did get other side effects but they have stopped!! so give it a go and see what suits you the best...

BTW im on Microgynen.. if thats how you spell it?!!

When I went off of the shot and onto the pill I went from 122 to 136 in 6 weeks and have never been back down under 130. I have been on this site for 2 months now and have lost 2-3 pounds. It is a little frustrating because of course I would love to be back under 130, but I know that I am doing better by my body and will eventually see results. But I do wonder if there is a pill with less chance of weight gain and/or difficulty losing weight.
  • There are lots of doctors that will tell you that birth control does not make you gain weight. My opinion on that is that they are all men:tongue: . I was on bc (Nuva Ring) for several months a couple of years ago after I had my first child and became heavier after taking the pill than I was at 9mos pregnant (and I had already lost almost all of my weight). And when I finally stopped the weight just kind of fell off. I really think that things like this vary from person to person. There is no one that knows more about your body than yourself, so it may just take some time to figure out what works for you.

    Ahhhh

I want the names of these bc's you are all taking! I am trying to lose weight, but I just recently decided to go on the pill (bf and I don't like the condoms)! I don't want to gain weight and my boobs are already a DD.

I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't go on it at all...

I have had really good luck being on Seasonique. I think it helps only getting my period every 3 months. I only have to bloat up and crave chocolate 4 times a year! I was able to shed the baby weight from my first pregnancy quite quickly while on these pills and I am hoping to do the same this time around too. I am a runner and push the kids in the stroller most days so that probably helped speed the process too.

I have been on the pill since I was 18 (off for about 2 years to have kids), and have never had a problem with weight gain associated with the pill. My weight gain was simply from being pregnant and not watching what I eat/working out. I have been on 4 different pills since age 18, all a low dose of hormone. Next month I move to a slightly higher dose (as I've done in the past) as my body gets too used to the one I'm on and I start getting loads of cramps, etc. I'm sure it's different for everyone, but I personally haven't noticed any difference. (I also tried Nuva Ring about 2 years ago for a 6 month span and no weight change with that either).

I was only on the pill for a few months when I was 18 and I remember my boobs getting bigger. BUT, I definitely think it makes sense that women gain weight when they are comfortable in a relationship (men too). This weight gain could be attributed to taking the pill?

    Thanks everyone for your replies!

I know that situations are always different for everybody but it's always nice to hear different points of views and experiences.

I used to be on Diane35 and didn't notice any weight gain, but my doctor took me off of it due to certain risks etc. so I tried to just stay off and not use any pills at all (I was originally using Diane not just for the BC effects but also for acne). When I stopped taking, I know I did end up getting pretty lax and stopped looking after myself and got too comfortable with eating out, etc. and thinking that I could always eat what I want without losing weight! *LOL* Hello reality call right there when I started noticing how much weight I'd put on. After getting married, I went back on the pill (again for BC effects and acne - TriCyclen) and I made a few good solid efforts to lose the weight with NO results at all after putting in 3 - 5 days of cardio classes and weight training. I went to my doctor and he said that if I was actually working hard to get the weight off with no results, it was quite possibly the pill and he moved me to Yasmin. Since I switched, I haven't tried very hard to lose the weight and am only starting with a serious effort again and it's been about two weeks...and it looks like I may have lost half a pound to a pound in that time frame...

Again, thanks for sharing your experiences and I really would like to "hear" more about experiences and different pills, etc...

I was on the pill for 6 years but i never really had any problems with losing (or gaining) weight on it!

however, the pill, and any BC in fact, can seriously deplete a lot of vitamins and minerals from the body, and this can lead to you puttng on weight. The b-vitamins are especially at risk of this so check out getting some good vitamin boosters.

    Levora, no problems at all.

the reason the pill "causes" weight gain is because of how it works. it tricks your body into believing you are preggo, so you will not ovulate. well, your body also thinks-OMG baby needs extra calories! so it makes you go into munchy-mode. as long as you resist the temptation to overeat, the pill cannot magically force you to gain weight. it can make temptation harder to resist, so you keep that in mind, you're okay.

also, pills that are tri-phasic (three levels of hormone each cycle) are more prone to bloating, water retention

pills that are mono-phasic (one same level all month) are less prone to it. and (BIG BONUS) is you want to skip your period for whatever reason, you can do so with a monophasic by just starting a new pill pack after the last "active" pill in your old pack. you may spot a tiny bit, but you will essentially skip right over that period. that's how those seasonale pills work.

Levora (aka Levlen) is a monophasic, and I  it. I was on tri-phasic forever, and I had come to HATE my pills. when I switched to mono, what a relief!!!

I have probably taken every pill they make. I have been struggling with endometriosis for over 8 yrs now and i've had to switch pills alot. The pills don't make you gain weight. The change in your hormones from taking the pill may make you hungrier so you will want to eat more that is something you will have to control.

Also for anyone with ENDOMETRIOSIS I have had this for over 8 years. Probably one of the worst cases. I have had to have surgery, do depo lupron treatments and nothing has helped. I cramped almost everyday. I lost 38lbs before I joined MFP and since then my cramping has decreased so much. I was going to have a hysterectomy and decided before I did that I wanted to get healthier and lose weight so the surgery and recovery would go smoother. Well since my weight loss I have put the surgery on hold because I feel so much better.

I was getting Depo shots, (which I hate, but I have brain damage and can't remember to take a pill) but quit about six months ago. Now that I'm losing weight I started to worry that I might get prego before the weight comes off.
I asked my Dr. what would have the least impact on my weight- she said that IUD or nuva ring were my best options.
I chose nuva ring- since my cervix is closed and the IUD sounded pretty dang painful.
I haven't gained, but my weight loss has slowed down. Not sure if that has anything to do with the ring, though.

Wow, Nuva Ring, huh? I wonder how that would work with my acne since I started taking BC mainly for that at first. Judging from what I'm seeing in the mirror now, it's not like Yasmin is really doing it for me either...I wonder what my doctor would think abut me switching over....

Then again, I'm not sure how comfy I'd be with the ring although I've been hearing good things about it...ah well, I think now that I'm really serious about losing weight this time around, I'll wait and see what the results are after a good solid effort to lose weight (including both exercise and eating properly)...maybe it's just me being impatient and not waiting long enough to see actual results that has me wanting to look for external things to blame rather than just working hard and just being PATIENT.

Thanks again for everyone sharing experiences and info about different types of BC! There are so many I'd never even heard of, I'd never thought to ask my doctor about any of them! Then again, who knows! Hopefully, in a year and a half, I won't be needing any at all :) But I would at least like to lose some weight first! *LOL*
