A friend & I went looking at some guns today & we ate at a buffet. We both love this place. I used to eat so much of thier broasted chicken, I'd almost have roll out to the car. He wanted to eat there today & they have a wonderful salad bar. So, better than fast food, I agreed. I still ate to much, but tried to keep it healthy. I had way to much salad, but with oil & vinegar, some ham mixed in, & raw veggies, & things that make a salad good. I had one piece of baked chicken, & some baked fish, & a piece of cornbread, with some melon & fresh pineapple for desert. I really tried hard to keep it at a minimum for protien & fat, but I'm sure I went clear over, don't have any idea how many calories, so I just put a 1,000 in my diary, & just don't know how or what to think about the amount I ate. I hear things like you should up your calories every now & then but not sure why. I know I ate to much, but felt like it was healthy, but you know resturants....they use a lot of salt, calories, & fat for taste & try to make you feel good b/c it looks healthy. Think I sabotaged? my hard work so far, or was it ok to do what I did?

I think it sounds like you made excellent decisions! Life throws curve balls like this and you handled it just fine. I would just count the calories and move on. Don't give it a second thought...

As long as you don't make a habit of this and keep in your calorie range most days you should be fine. :)

I wouldn't consider it a sabotage on yourself. We all need to be able to function in the "real world" after weight loss. I think you did great loading up on salad and sticking with the baked chicken, etc. And fresh pineapple for dessert! Great job! As long as you get back to normal tomorrow you are good to go!

I went just this week and ate everything I wanted - NO LIMIT!

Once per week this is allowed.
    Works for me!

It was one day- give yourself a few days for your body to process the food (sodium + the more processed foods usually mean your body holds the food a bit longer than normal) and move on. The fact is you aren't going to be perfect 100% of the time so really just making the best of it- as you did- is your best option. Eating is more than just fuel- it's a social activity as well- needn't feel guilty everytime you go over.

Just as general info- many people find that it's good to go over every now and then because it forces your body to adjust to accomodate the extra calories. Keeps your body out of a rut, makes you feel good many times, and generally promotes variety and a healthy metabolism. Obviously it's better if you can do it with healthy foods, but I'm personally all about rolling with the punches.
  • The body can get used to running on a certain number of calories. People recommend jumping up your calories every now and then to keep the body confused so the metabolism doesn't slow back down. At least that's how I understand it. A guy I work with has used this method as well as a very strict diet and tons of exercise and has lose almost 60 lbs in less than a year.

sounds like you made awesome choices! we went to a chinese buffet the other week, and i quick added 1000 calories...but im kind of anal about my loggin, so i actually searched for each item i ate and got as close as i could to the amount i ate and it ended up being closer to 1500 calories. it was my cheat day so i didnt worry too much, but it was eye opening! i had a big salad to start and then one plate with a tiny bit of the things that looked really good

Once isn't going to hurt you for sure! You can run each thing through the data base and see how close you are in your estimate, or chalk it up to you free day.. in which you made great choices.. and get back to tracking tomorrow! :)

I agree that one splurge isn't the end of the world. You have to eat 3500 calories IN ADDITION TO your daily requirements to gain a pound.

On the other hand, if you routinely eat without logging and just count it as 1000 calories even though you're physically stuffed, you're going to run into problems. I would bet you can eat far more than that at one sitting, depending on the calorie density of the food.

You need to get past the idea that you are starving and impoverished. Just because it's an all-you-can-eat restaurant doesn't mean you have to "get your money's worth." Use a teaspoon instead of a serving spoon to load your plate, and only go back for the foods that were really worth eating more of. Once it's on your plate, you'll feel the need to finish it even if it's mediocre.

For things like chicken or meatloaf, see if your friend will eat half of your piece.

Good job on the choices you made. It never hurts to indulge once in a while. Just get up in the morning and not let it affect you. You got this!
