MFP calculations tell me that the daily goal for fat consumption for me is 51. What? I thought to lose weight you should eat under 30, or am I wrong. either way, I have eaten 34 g of fat today, so I lose (not weight) either way? Man, I am so confused.

Fat can be a wonderful addition to your diet. It really helps keep you full. Contrary to popular opinion, fat really isn't the boogie man of diets and good nutrition. You don't want to go over-board, because 1 gram of fat has 9 calories in it, where as 1 gram of carbohydrates or proteins have 4 calories... so moderation is the key, but you don't need to be afraid of the fat!
I'd recommend focusing on olive oil, fish oil, almonds, and other things that give you wonderful, healthy, mono and poly unsaturated fats. Some saturated fat is okay too.
By the way, the 30 you are thinking about is actually percent of total calories consumed and not grams. The 51 that MFP is recommending for you is probably grams... and 51 grams should put you at under 30% of your total calories from fats if it's set at MFPs default.0 -

This exactly.
As long as your fat is coming from good sources you should be fine.0 -

Exactly this. You don't have to eat this much fat every day though; it's more of an upper limit.0 -
Thanks so much everyone ! I appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me!0

You need to have the fats... if you go too low on fats you can cause all sorts of issues. Give it a Google... :noway:0

I get most of my calories (60-70%) from fat, and the rest from protein. Fat is awesome and keeps you full, not to mention it's essential for certain biological functions - there's really no reason to be afraid of it.
Obviously use whatever macronutrient ratio makes you feel best, but it is still just eating at a deficit that will make you lose weight, not what ratios you put in.0
