I've seen a few of you talk about brown rice, and I'm curious - how is brown rice healthier than white rice? I'm about to make this a change in my diet and would like to read up on your thoughts and opinions on this. I've already stopped eating white bread, so rice is next on the list.

hello, i am a chef and my husband is a personal trainer. we made a choice 3 years ago to take all white out of our diet and replace it with brown. anything that is white is bleached and processed; such as white bread, pasta, flour and so on. mostly all things brown is the natural form; such as cane sugar, brown rice, 100% whole wheat bread, wheat flour and wheat pasta. It certainly is a great chioce to switch from white to brown good luck and if you have any questions follow me on twitter @chefshawnda or leave me a message.

Brown rice and whole grain breads are typically (but not always) not as processed as much as their white counterparts. However, their nutritional value isn't really that much different. There is still HFCS in lots of whole grain breads, for example ... so that sucks if you're avoding that ... and the calorie content is almost identical in most cases.... So, I mean, the texture of brown rice and whole grain breads is different than white, and if you prefer it, then eat it.

IMHO, there's no real reason to switch to all brown or to avoid white foods unless you're in to making your healthy eating a little more difficult.

brown rice is a better food than white rice because of the additional fiber and nutrients it contains. Since a larger amount of fiber contributes to fullness, you may eat less and thus have a lower glycemic load from brown rice.

Brown has more fibre than white, and the GI is lower too on brown(i think). You also stay full longer on brown than on white. Calories as the same.

The amount of fiber in brown rice is insignificantly larger than that in white rice, if you ask me... look at this:

    http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/cereal-grains-and-pasta/5707/2

    Brown rice:

    Serving size 195g
    Calories 216
    Dietary Fiber 4g

    http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/cereal-grains-and-pasta/5722/2

    White rice:

    Serving size 174g
    Calories 169
    Dietary Fiber 2g

.... now, I'm no mathemetician, but the fact that the serving sizes are different (the brown rice serving is larger by 21g) makes the values of calories and fiber misleading. Additionally, you are looking at less calories in the white rice, and yes, half as much fiber ... but I really don't think two grams of fiber is going to make or break whether or not you're actually hungry any faster.

As an aside, I have Orowheat Country Buttermilk and 100% Whole Wheat bread here (I like the texture of whole wheat, my boyfriend likes white) ... and they're very similarly labeled:

    Country Buttermilk:

    Calories 100
    Dietary Fiber <1g

    Whole Wheat:

    Calories 90
    Dietary Fiber 2g

I'm not going to force whole wheat bread on my boyfriend over ten calories and a gram or so of fiber.

I personally just love brown rice. I like the taste better. :D But yes, it's good because of what everybody else has said.
