I want to plan a vacation for June...my parameters are:

Great snorkeling!
Great beaches!
Cheap-ish (Hawaii is out of the question, as a flight from Boston is nearly a grand)

Anyone been anywhere they recommend? :)

I'd tell you Cuba.....but your american..little problem there! lol Thailand has the best snorkelling I have ever seen..hands down KOH ROCK off Koh Lanta wins. Too bad no Hawaii, the island of Kauai itself has so many beaches where you can just stop the car and jump in and snorkel

As a south Floridian, I'm obligated to mention Florida. Pick a coast. The Keys are awesome for snorkeling and fishing. The beaches are kinda lame, though. West coast Florida has amazing beaches. (Sanibel, Captiva)

Oh yeah, and you could do the Bahamas.

Bermuda would probably be the best, relatively cheap place from Boston.

Puerto Rico! My boyfriend and i went in October and it was amazing. Check out the snorkeling and beaches on the island of Culebra. We stayed on the main island in San Juan and would drive to catch the ferry to Culebra for the snorkeling. It wasn't that expensive at all....it would be even cheaper if you stayed in Fajardo probably - that's where all the ferries to Culebra are. Playa Flamenco is there - ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!

Canary islands, Thailand (the flight is going to be expensive but every thing there is dirt cheap), Mexico, I was in plays del Carmen a few years ago, amazing barrier reef!! Florida does actually have great beaches!

I'm going to Belize in 6 weeks!! Very good snorkeling there. But I would love to go back to Roatan as well. Best snorkeling I've done was in Roatan and I've been a lot of places snorkeling. Now that I am scuba certified I really need to get back there, but Belize is up first!
  • Grand Cayman or St. Thomas are both really nice.

I second Florida beaches! I'm moving to Tampa this year because I fell in love with the beaches when I went on vacation there for the past 3 years. I just got lucky that they have a great program in exercise science for my masters. LOL

Anyway, my favorites were Fort DeSoto ( http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_ft_desoto.htm ), Egmont Key ( http://www.floridastateparks.org/egmontkey/ ), and Honeymoon Island ( http://www.floridastateparks.org/honeymoonisland/ ) as far as beaches and snorkeling at Egmont is cool around the old fort. Plus those are all in and around Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, for lots of nightlife, restaurants, theme parks, etc.
  • Puerto Rico. It's geographically closer to the East Coast, it's part of the US so you don't need a passport and accept US money and people speak English there, and it has all the Caribbean activities like stuff you listed.
