Social Situations and control?

Hi everyone. I am doing great following my plan and eating good. I am exercising and losing weight consistently. My only problem is the occasions were I am with friends and family, about 2 times a month. I seem to eat everything everyone else is eating including drinks and it's not healthy. Its almost a mini binge that I feel like I can't control. I act like a kid in a candy store. Do any of my MFP friends have any suggestions or ideas on how to control myself at these functions? Please feel free to add me and I appreciate all comments.

Have a salad before you leave the house for the restaurant, and then just choose wisely. Share main dishes that are unhealthy. Call ahead find out what healthy options they have, or consider it a cheat meal, although you do at some point need to learn how to take control of your eating and not let it control you. Making the social gatherings at places that aren't food oriented also help.0 -

I'm in the same boat.... If I know where I'm going before hand, I look up the menu online to see the calorie information. That helps me stay away from the things that others are eating that I love. I also try to split things with others, that way I can still partake, but not eat as much. As for the drinks, I stick to mixed drinks with no calorie mixers (in my case gin and club soda) to minimize the damage. Good luck!0

I think it's perfectly normal to indulge when in the company of friends unless it's an everyday occurrence. For instance, if I know I'm going out with friends in advance, I really push myself at the gym days prior to and just enjoy myself when that day rolls around. It's less stressful than feeling guilty!0

Try drinking a fair amount of water before you go, that way you will feel a bit fuller.0

MAKE A PLAN! If you're going to a restaurant, view the menu online in advance (when you're not hungry), pick something healthy (you can usually find the nutrition information online). Always know what youre going to eat before you get there. If it's a meal like Thai food, or Chinese, check the calories on MFP and plan accordingly. If you only are going to eat the serving size, ask for a box when you get your meal, so you can get it out of sight immediately. OR if you don't want to take it home and feel like wasting food because you're desperate not to eat the additional calories, take your portion and dump salt all over the rest, or add water. Just make it so that you CAN'T eat it. I've done that when I knew I was totally out of control.0

I agree! I don't think twice per month is bad. My aunt lost 60 pounds on Slim Fast doing it only Monday through Friday. On weekends (every weekend) she didn't diet at all. Currently, I am eating very healthy Monday through Friday and eating what I want on the weekends. I have lost 6 pounds since the 27th of December which I think is good. Life is too short to never eat what we want.
I also think it is a good idea to eat veggies or a salad before you go so that you don't go overboard.

I agree! I don't think twice per month is bad. My aunt lost 60 pounds on Slim Fast doing it only Monday through Friday. On weekends (every weekend) she didn't diet at all. A high-calorie day once a week is good for weight loss, so those couple of occasions per month can work in your favor. I wouldn't recommend forgetting everything you've learned and going all out, but making those your higher calorie days for the week would be one way to handle it.
In the end, we need to learn self control if we're going to be successful. Treat yourself, but don't go crazy, and you'll have nothing to feel bad about.0 -

Although its not that often so overall it probably does not make a huge difference, it really would be good to figure out how to stay in control. I recommend drinking a sip of water every time you want to take a bite of unhealthy food. Drink plenty of water before hand and look at the menu ahead of time and plan it out.
For me, if I order first and get something healthy it inspires friends to do the same and that way there are less unhealthy options to chose from.0
