Hello. I bought some eggs from a local farm and was wondering if anyone knows how long farm fresh eggs last? Do they last as long as generic/commercial eggs? Either way, they certainly are delish!

They last much, much longer, as the eggs you buy at the store are already semi-old. My father in law has chickens and when we get eggs from him they last a long time. Mind you, eggs don't last that long in my house anyway but they have been fine one month after the fact. The old eggs you buy at the store usually still have a month of life left in them when you purchase them. Always use the sniff test when cracking an egg though, if they have been hanging around the fridge for a long time. There is no mistaking the smell of a bad egg!
  • They last longer than the ones you buy in the store because it takes quite a while for them go from chicken to super market shelf.

My last director had chickens and I was lucky enough to eat fresh eggs only for a few years. You're right - they're delicious and prettier with a deeper color than supermarket eggs. I know I kept mine in the fridge for a month plus. A few of my co-workers never refrigerated their eggs and kept them for quite a while just on their counters.

    Enjoy!

we have chickens here and the way we test eggs that somehow haven't been eaten straight away is the float test
fill a bowl with water and place the egg in it, if the egg lies flat it's fine to eat, if it stands on end then it's gone bad

hope you enjoy your egg, the fresher the better in my opinion
  • yes, farm fresh eggs last as long as store bought as long as they are refrigerated...we have 1 rooster and 2 hens and get 2 new eggs every day....It is hard to eat or use 14 eggs a week, we just keep them in the refrig and they are fine
