It is good that your recognize that you are eating due to boredom. What you need to do is find something to occupy yourself. Take up a new hobby. Do you like to read? Is there something you need to research on the internet? How about a computer game or do you have a Wii or other gaming system that you can play? If you can find something to distract yourself, you will forget about eating.

I find that if I make my kitchen closed after a certain point in the evening, I rarely feel tempted to eat, even if bored.
  • I'm hoping to take up Jewellery making - fiddling about with my hands and keeping brain occupied should curb the eating!!!

Also, if you MUST snack carrot sticks and salsa are my friend...

Bored eating is one of the worst! I know people say its emotional eating but for me its bored eating. keep busy. a busy mind and busy hands will help. I have heard the saying "Idle hands are the devils playground" enough times to figure out it also applies to eating, my hands are very invloved it seems....

I have taken up a few hobbies, I dont do them all the time or all at the same time but I have sifted through a few to find ones that I like.

here are some busy hand hobbies/activities that I do:

PS3, love my video games the more instense the better, Assissns creed is great
Wii games - get up and get busy while having fun
Crochet I love to crochet, its super easy and inexpensive too. Knitting is good but not for me.
cross stiching, you CANNOT eat while doing this or you will ruin the mat.
beading, beading beading, I love beading
reading (now this is a one hand activity so be carefull, I put a big big cup o f tea in the free hand and do not get out any snacks unless they are veggies or sunflower seeds) this can also include crosswords, sodoku etc.
painting or drawing, not for me but for some it works.
    weaving or friendship bracelets

I suggest going to a local craft store and spend some time looking around, look for something that requires both hands, clean hands(food would ruin project) or would make your hands too dirty to want to eat. there are so many crafts out there that are great busy work.
  • This is my real downfall too!

I agree - you have to keep doing things with your hands, anything so that eating becomes a bother rather than easy. I've been sewing and learning to knit, which keeps my hands busy and my mind off food.

I also keep a drink beside me, so if I do get those niggling hunger feelings, I have a sip of drink instead. It tends to help kill the voices for a few more minutes.

    Find a hobby lol
  • I'm a huge bordom eater, so I always have a 1L bottle of water with me. Whenever I"d used to reach for a bite, I reach for the bottle. Keeps my hand and mouth busy, my tummy full, and makes sure I get enough water throughout the day. If water isn't cutting it, you can also chew gum.

when you're hungry, drink a glass of water. a lot of times your body tells you it's hungry when in reality it's just dehydrated. if you're still hungry after a glass of water then have a piece of fruit (:
