Speech therapist--PLEASE HELP
hello everyone... i know this is the website for losing weight but beside that i have one more problem.. I cant pronounce the sound 'r' as i should... my r is formed in the throat... as i child i went to see speech therapist but i soon gave up... now when i grew up i feel ashamed to go there and its getting on my nerves... because when i speak to an unknown person the first thing i see on her/his face while listening to me is the smile because of my 'r'... is there anyone with similar problem who can give me some instructions or exercises for my 'r'....?? THANK YOU A LOT..

Just say you are from Massachusetts.

Kidding aside go to Youtube and search for pronouncing R,there are a bunch of videos.
Here is one of them...

Youre asking about a medical related situation.... if you are experiencing problems associated with your speech, you really need to go back to a Speech Therapist, or consider consultations with your primary care physician and specialist.
This is not a medical related website.... and the type of assistance you need cannot ever be done here online.. that type of help requires one-on-one contact/interaction....0 -
I'm an SLP! Try purchasing something called "The world of R"...it may help!0

@cram, I thought we were all here to help one another. Bottom line. When I ask about wedding stuff, or my dogs, is that inappropriate? I don't think so. As a speech pathologist I find it's paramount to advocate for those who need it. To the OP, it sounds like you are very self conscious about your articulation"disorder." Since it's affecting your daily activities negatively I would certainly seek out professional help. The "r" typically is the last sound acquired and it is one that a lot of people have issues with, also the /s/ which results in a lisp. There are universities that offer clinics for their undergrad and graduate students. This is where I did a lot of FREE therapy for people within my community who needed it. I'd start there. If you have medical insurance it may be covered privately or at an outpatient clinic. In my experience, articulation therapy, drill work, etc. will work to correct it if you have the desire to. Obviously there's a slight chance of some kind of anatomical problem but I doubt it.
Best of luck!0 -
Hello  I am also a speech language pathologist and agree that you may find it beneficial to seek professional help from an SLP if you are self conscious about the production of your /r/. I understand that you received therapy when you were a child, but perhaps now that you are an adult you will be able to approach therapy with renewed vigor. Good luck!0

Hey! I just realized that my whole message got deleted and only the 1st line stayed!
My fellow SLPs are absolutely right!
What I had written was that I find it great that you are willing to work on your speech as an adult! There are so many great resources out there that you can use, and "The Word of "R" is a great tool if you want to purchase it without getting professional help from an SLP, although I truly believe that seeing one of us would be the most effective way for you to improve your speech. /r/ is one of the hardest sounds for children, as well as adults to attain. I have a lot of students on my caseload working on that sound! Start by checking out if there is a local university that offers some classes or therapy for adults your age. I know the college I went to, we did this as part of our practicum, and the adults were very grateful! If that doesn't work, you can always try outpatient therapy at a hospital, or at a private practice (although here if your insurance doesn't cover it...you have to come out of pocket). If you have any other questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to ask! Just know that you are not in this alone, and that we're proud that you're taking a step in bettering yourself in every way! Good luck!0 -
I just want you to know that you are not the only one out there with a speech challenge. It's something I fight against everyday as well. I actually cannot get /m/ /n/ combinations correct. Instead of animal it comes out aminal. Same thing with cinnamon, and aluminum (I just say tin foil). I went to speech therapy as a child as well and although it did help me with other things (such as no longer sounding like the gopher from Winnie the Pooh), this is one that I still battle. Unless I really concentrate on the word, it comes out backwards. I've just reached a point where I don't even notice it even though others do. I wish you luck in facing your challenge and know that you can overcome it.0

wedding stuff is not medical related....
dogs are not medical related
the OP is asking about a ****medical-related situation****....
Its no different than any other thread on MFP, including the ones I moderate. If you are truly an SLP, you would also know that using a non-medical related website can be counterproductive to a person's care and that person-to-person consultations are what is necessary....0
