Gain 5 lbs in one day? Seriously?

5 x 3500 cal = you didn't eat that much since Sunday. Remain calm and watch your sodium, drink lots of water and keep on logging. Stick with it and you will get beyond this bump in the road! lol

it's either sodium, your time of the month and/or are you eating enough? it goes against our logic, but if you are not eating enough cals, you will not lose.
also are you weighing yourself at the same time of the day. i weigh as soon as I get up, with no clothes, before BM (but after peeing). Strangely once I have a BM, the scale is higher. weird.0 -
Hang in there, sometimes the scale is not your friend! I'm still weighing in everyday, I can't seem to stop. It's my reward for a good day! That added weight will drop and you'll be pleasantly surprised the next time you weigh in.0

Its prob. just the water.... or stuff in high salt that's retaining the water. Keep going, you'll see that you shed those off in no time. BTW - if your doing any strength workouts... you might be building muscle.
No, no, no, even if she is doing strength training it will not be muscle, as you do not build any measurable amount of muscle while in a caloric deficit (eating below maintenance), and it takes months to build 5 lbs of muscle even if you eat above maintenance. Gaining muscle is very hard to do and most cannot do it without really trying via diet and exercising properly to gain.0 -
DON'T WEIGH YOURSELF EVERYDAY! Do it once a week, tops. Weight can vary as much as 5 lbs per day (mine has varied as much as 8). Don't cause yourself unnecessary stress!
This is the EXACT reason I weight myself everyday. I know that I could not gain 5# overnight -so it's most likely water retention - but gaining 5# in a week is very doable. If I got on the scale one Sunday and weighed 120 and got on the scale the next Sunday and weighed 125 I would be very upset with myself and start to wonder what I did wrong, possibly making myself work out more or eat less - but if I gained 5# overnight - I don't stress about it - because I know there are other reasons for it besides actually gaining WEIGHT. A daily weigher and won't change0 -
Even weekly weigh-ins can show some fluctuation based on water weight, hormones, digestive processes, etc, so you *know* daily scale checks are going to be a little flaky. You're doing fine. Now, if you go two or three *weeks* and you're still 5 lbs up, then yes, maybe something's gong on. But one day on the scale means nothing in the grand scheme of things.0

I just posted about this on my profile. I've been working my *kitten* off (yes, attempting to literally do so) and I have gone up 5lbs. Maybe we're eating the same wrong things -- tooooo much sodium. Let's both drink a junk load of water and see if we can flush it out before we quit. Because I'm a total quitter and I don't wanna be!0

I agree about increasing your water intake and watching your salt, but you also might want to try eating more. I know it sounds counterintuative, but it looks like you have about 100 pounds to lose and are only eating 1200 - 1400 calories? That's WAY low. 1200 is pretty much the absolute minimum for any woman, but the more you have to lose the more calories you need to keep that metabolism fired up (especially if you plan to exercise). Check out this calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating:

I know upping your calories is a scary prospect when you're trying to lose, but it really works! I promise!0 -
I know how you feel.. I have been doing the same thing.. But i keep remembering the difference between before and now is i gave up to soon. Teh prize is around the corner. So I keep trying, I am sooo discouraged at time but im lucky because i love to exercise howeve i do get to think well why keep going my body isnt budging. I mean i been battleing the same 3 pounds since augest. So If i can do it you can do it. I have been losing and gaining the same thee over and over. I wont give up... I really think it is my diet I have to stop eating so much lol. I eat good healthy. I just like to eat So it think maybe im not in a calories deficit like i think,, I dotn know Im gonna get a food scale soon. Have you tried a food scale?
Also I lost two pounds of the three when i started to add more protien and lift heavy weigths welll heavy as i can. I need to make myself clear i am looking to lose 40 pounds lol well 44 but i cant get there if i keep playing with three of them..
My point is please dont give up.. you deserve more.. YOur body may be fighting it but you can win tell it "Whos Boss?"0 -
5lbs in 1 day is water. Unless you ate an extra 18,000 calories over maintenance in the last couple days.
Yup. This could be water weight due to sodium, TOM, or exhausted muscles which retain water as well. Or a combination of all three! If you're drinking tons of water and you're not having to use the restroom a lot, you can bet that you're probably retaining some water.0 -

Dont Quit you deserve more!!! If i can keep at it and not lose but three pounds since Aug so can you.. Good idea more water lol wishing you luck!!0 -
This is why I end up going off track. So I get on the scale this morning, and I am UP 5 lbs from Sunday. I have been under my calorie goal every day for the last 11 days. I could just cry.
If you just started then it is normal. It is a shock to the body and the body is trying to protect itself (the body see calorie restriction and sudden strenuous exercise as stress and treats it as such).
You have not built muscle. This is almost impossible for a woman to do - heck it's a task for a man to put on five pounds of muscle. We lack the necessary testosterone levels to do this. If anything you will lose muscle along with fat as you restrict your calories and do tons of exercise - especially cardio.0 -
You did not eat over 17,000 extra calories since Sunday.
It's water weight.
Give it a couple of days, it will go away.0 -
Thanks to everyone for the replies -- I drink 8-10 glasses of water per day, and I weigh same time, every morning, after elimination, no clothes. So I will also track my sodium intake. That's a great idea. It could be PMS, but my cycles are not regular, so I never know. I love the feedback about the food diary -- I hadn't thought about the processed foods because I have removed SO MUCH crap from my diet that I thought I was doing better.
I really appreciate having this forum available for immediate and constructive feedback. Thanks again.0
