Question on eating more calories

I've read a lot of posts that suggest eating more calories to try to jumpstart more weightloss after a plateau or if you arent seeing the results you expected. Just curious, are you suggesting to eat more net calories or to eat more calories and then workout more to offset them?
Thanks in advance for you help/input!

I wasn't eating enough calories, so to bust my plateau I changed my MFP setting to lose 0.5 lb/week and still ate my exercise calories back as I've always done.0
