New to this weight loss and dieting. Need help!

so i havent really DIETED before. What are some tips that you would recommend doing, Like is there certain things i should avoid? or just staying at or under my calorie goal? i have been exercising at least 30 minutes a day and i know sweating is good and i do. i sweat like a pig. i just need to understand how to lose this weight with the dieting part i guess. i know NOTHING about calories or anything like that. anything you can advise me on will be MUUUCH APPRECIATED.

All of those things you listed are great ways. For me, logging in my calories eaten and calories burned is the most helpful. If I am not logging, I tend to go way off track, but keeping a running tally seems to be a great way to see exactly what you are eating and how much. It gets to be fun and almost like a game, at least for me. I would suggest you just start logging everything that goes in your mouth and try to stay around what it suggests. You may have to up your calories/day if you are eating the right amount and stop losing. If you don't eat enough, your body will go into starvation mode. I also find that drinking LOTS of water helps fill up my stomache! Your doing great just by coming on this site!!0

Thanks It says to get out of "starvation mode" i need to eat at least 1200 cuz i have been below a couple times.. but is just eating 1200 (or more up to my goal) and exercising going to do the trick or is there more to it? lol.0 -
I got myself a HRM (heart rate monitor) and put it on for a day to find out how many calories I actually burned. 1200 calories is just a generic number used. You can also find the formula for calculating your daily number. I will look for the formula and get back to you!0

The easiest thing to do is plug your numbers into mfp and eat close to the calories it recommends - I try to be 50 - 100 cals under but if I go over occasionally (say, once every couple of weeks), I don't sweat it.
Other than that, work to modify your diet so that you're eating healthier things. Read these forums and learn from other people's questions and the answers they get. Don't allow yourself the "I can't have" mentality - if you look at this as a punishment or something restrictive, you may be setting yourself up to fail. Instead, look at this as a way to become healthier and fitter. Make every food a choice. If you really want something, have it in moderation.
And, the biggest tip - really start focusing on portion size. When I started, I found that was my biggest problem.0 -

Oh ok. i think that is the easiest part for me. the portion size. i have been doing excellent with that. and feeling great. i feel good and ive already started to lose but i just want some knowledge to know that i am doing the right things. Thank you!0 -

Before you get all caught up in the cardio-hype, figure out EXACTLY what your goals are (likely the loss of body fat %....which is NOT the same as the number on a weight scale), and then make a lifestyle decision.
