I'm interested in getting rid of some stretch marks that I've accumulated over time. I've heard that using cocoa butter once a day helps get rid of them...

Anyone tried it before with success?

My surgeon recently recommended it for my knee surgery scar and pregnancy stretch marks. He says to use it twice a day along with vitamin E oil. It takes awhile but eventually they will diminish. They may not disappear completely.

I used cocoa butter everyday during my pregnancy and everyday since I gave birth, 7 months out I still have pretty noticeable stretchmarks. they are lighter, but I'm not sure it's the cocoa butter.
  • I have just started using a cocoa butter cream for stretch marks. It's been about.. not even a week.. so if I see any results at all (in, say the next few months), I'll be glad to let you know.

nope...sorry. stretch marks are deeper and topical applications don't make them go away. they usually fade over time and become more "silver" instead of red but coco butter doesn't make them go away.

I've heard Vitamin E (Mederma for example I think) for any kind of scar - never heard cocoa butter. I did learn from my doc when I was pregnant that they've done bunches of studies on cocoa butter/shea butter to prevent stretch marks and it doesn't work - just an old wives' tale. :(

It does not work at all....sorry.....they're there for life. If that worked, none of us would have them..... :)

Nothing fades them, apart from time.
  • I used palmer's during both my pregnancies. I don't really have stretch marks. but it could have either been the butter or genetics. genetics play a big role in if someone will get stretch marks. I would like to think the cocoa butter helped me, but i don't know :/ but it doesn't hurt to try!!! and if it doesn't work then you will still have nice soft skin!!! :)

A close friend that has lost 100 lbs. recommends Bio-oil. She swears by it!

I used coca butter during my entire pregnancy and I didn't get one stretch mark! Thank goodness:) I think it's probably different with each person, but I've always heard of others who have used it with both positive & negative results. It won't hurt to try it:)

There is no cure for stretch marks. Moisturizing can help fade them if they are still pink, but the fibers are stretched or torn beneath the surface so they can't be removed unless they are cut off as in a tummy tuck. There is an indication that keeping well moisturized skin may help to prevent them but I think part of it is genetic as to who is prone to them and how much stretching your dermis can take.

I used retin-a on my strechmarks and they are almost completely gone.
Of course I had to talk my doctor in a script and my insurance didnt cover it - but I got the generic.
  • Once you have stretch marks you cant get rid of them. They are deep tears in the skin, Cocoa butter will help to keep the skin moistureized to make the marks appear lighter and fade over time. I believe laser surgery is one of the only ways to get rid of them. And still thats not even guarnteed.

If you don't want to make a lotion (recipe below) try just the Rosehip Seed Oil that you can get at a vitamin store (like GNC) or a healthfood store (in aromatherapy). It's been shown to reduce stretch marks. Try exfoliating the areas while in the shower too. And if you are adventurous, here's a concoction of several ingredients used to reduce stretch marks and/or scarring.

    1 oz Rosehip Seed Oil
    1 oz Shea Butter
    1/2 oz. wheat germ oil
    1 vitamin E gel caplet

Melt Shea Butter over low heat, add rosehip and wheat germ oil, cool and then add the contents of the vitamin E gel caplet.
Apply it daily after you bath.

Stretch marks come from lack of elasticity in the skin which cocoa butter cannot fix. It's a myth - women who don't get stretch marks aren't prone to them anyway but if they use cocoa butter they will give it all the credit. I used CB for yearrrrsssss and it didn't make a difference at all!
  • I used burts bees wax on my belly whan I was pregnant and it helped with keeping my skin moisturized. I hated the smell of cocoa butter I ended up giving it to my mom. However i don't believe there is a be-gone forever product for stretch marks. It helps look less visible but that's about it.
