.......... what's the most reliable source for calculating the calories burned?
On the advice of fellow MFPers I bought a HRM to help me record my exercise more accurately. It doesn't calculate the calories burned though so what do others use to calculate the calories burned from the average heart rate?

I'm very poor!!! lol. I had to get a cheap one off ebay. It's by Target Fitness. I know it's basic, and knew that when I bought it, but I thought it was better to have a basic one than nothing at all. Now I can save up for a really decent one. In the meantime though I could do with a link to a site with the formula or a calculator0

I use a polar hrm and it doesn't work out the cals either. I found a site that has a calculator and this is what I've been using. Not sure if it's correct but the cals it works out are reasonably close to the estimations mfp give and it's better than nothing!

I have a Polar FT7 with chest strap. It calculates cals burnt, duration of exercise, heart rate at time of exercise and and I'm pretty sure there's more but these are the more important information that i need.
I purchased mine on Ebay brand new for $130.00 AUD. I think it came from Sydney. For me and my daughter in law (who also has the same one) it is a very important tool in our quest to get fit & healthy.

hrm with calories burned indicatore are overreated...
the one that counts them accurattely is polar, others i researched really overestimate
mine counts calories but i just ignore and go with the formula0 -
Regarding Polar HRMs, FT4 and above calculate calories.
FT4 and FT7 appear to be very popular on MFP, I recently bought the Polar FT4f from Amazon, it calculates calories a treat. I have called it Lottie and I luffs it.0 -
I have just purchased a York HRM and still trying to analyze the benefit. But I did check out the site mentioned by others -

Found that the calories burned were very similar from the HRM and the site. But....the machine (stationary bike) had about 100 calories less burned for a 45 min session. I use the machine calorie count for my daily exercise.0 -

I had a look at the above web site and based on my average heart rate it calculated way too high the amount of calories burnt. Also the author was not too sure about how to calculate accurately the VO2max formula. Too hit & miss for me. I'll stick with my HRM.0 -
Right, I found a link to work out my VO2max and that online calculator now works a treat and results look much more realistic to me now. Thanks for the help guys. If I'm going to do this I'm going to do it properly and the formula you chose could make a massive difference so I wanted to get it right. Using the formula alone my class last night burned 847 cals whereas using the online calculator with my VO2max comes out at 594 which seems much more likely but that was a difference of almost 300 calories which is a big deal if you're thinking in food terms!0

I got the Polar FT4 after I almost bought a cheaper one that didn't calculate calories (oops) and I LOVE it. I got mine at christmas when all the deals were on and it's pink!0

I went to Sports Authority & got one that only tracked the heart rate & returned it. ****'s Sproting Goods had an inexpensive one with a chest strap that tracks calories burned. I think I paid $30). I too am on the monetarily challenged wagon so I had to get what I can afford. To be honest, it works great. Some people said the cheaper ones would have issues when you go to the gym & get around others with one, but I had no issues. As a patter of fact, my machine synced with it. I eyed the other machines around me to make sure it wasn't stealing their info & it was fine. I can't remember the brand, but if you want to send me a message, I can get that for you when I'm near it (it's currently in my gym bag NOT near me). Good luck!0

I just got mine and used it for the first time today. It is a GSI, it was on sale for $30 on Amazon and had good reviews, it calculates calories burned and I didn't want to spend a ton either!0

Ok, this is what I found easiest and most realistic:
Used this link for the calculator:

But found it really high without the VO2max so found that by doing this:
(max heart rate/resting heart rate) x 15 = VO2max
And to work this out I needed to find out my max heart rate, so I found out by doing this:
220 - age = my max heart rate
And with all that I could use the calculator.
Now I need a lie down!!!0 -
I had the basic target fitness HRM and used the calculator on the triathlon training site. Now that I have the next model up that does count the cals for you, I find that the calculator on the site gave a much higher reading but that was probaby because I didn't put in my Vo2 max.0
