My Secret

I am first generation in this country, my father was born in Italy and my mother was born in Puerto Rico. Food has always been a huge part of our culture, and I have grown up in a family that has never had weight issues. Seems impossible when you walk into my house and see some of our dinners - pasta, chicken cutlets, deep fried bananas, rice and beans, italian bread, mozzarella cheese, sausage, heavy italian dressings, fried calamari, chicken parm,..well you get it. These are the foods that everyone seems to be afraid of. Among all this chaos we also have lots of greens, salads, fruit, nuts..etc. I'd say it's pretty well rounded. My family has always been big about eating what you want and not restricting yourself. I've always had junkfood all over the house as well. My parents never told me not to eat something because I'd get fat or unhealthy. I'm pretty sure they knew I wasn't an idiot and knew the difference between making an unhealthy choice vs a healthy choice. I think this is a big reason why none of us have ever been overweight.

What I am trying to say is- eating healthy is great, but being obsessive and restrictive on your everyday eating is UNREALISTIC. If you really want that slice of cake - have it. Just don't eat the entire cake ;) . Don't restrict millions of things out of your diet and not allow yourself to indulge every so often. If you constantly restrict yourself from everything, when you are put in a situation out at a party or a restaurant it's going to be a tough situation. Learn how to control portion sizes and still eat what you want! And ya know what? If you do eat that entire cake, get your butt to the gym and burn some calories! Don't stress yourself over weightloss, have fun with it, and enjoy your food!

It's very true! my momma's italian and love is always shown as love at out place. Restriction is deff the pathway to hell. your just gonna end up gaining even more weight if you don't give into what your body is craving! great post doll hopefully some people will benefit!
  • I am with you on this! Cause if you do restrict your self all the time it just makes you want it more, then you will over do it.

If that works for you that's great. Italians often have very healthy kitchens.

Thank your parents for good genes. Not all of us are created with them.

I like this.I know what you mean. My mom is Italian (my grandparents were "fresh off the boat") and my dad is black and from Georgia. Southern food and Italian are the WORST for you and that's what I grew up on. My Italian side is HUGE (in quantity not size lol) and everytime we all get together, food is a big part of it. Ginormous meatballs, pasta, soups, cookies, etc. On my dad's side, cornbread, bacon fat in EVERYTHING, ox tails, pies, cakes. It's insane!

You couldn't be more right. I went to Texas for a week to spend time with my in laws and came back 10lbs heavier. And of course they make Southern food soo good it's almost impossible to resist.
