Too Much Fiber?

Fiber and protien are good...they keep you fuller longer and it would take a darned lot of fiber to OD on it. Both soluable and insoluable fiber are essential to keep things moving and keep the colon healthy. Once your body is done digesting the nutrients from your intake, the only thing left is the toxins, sugars, and other bad things. This means you want to get excess waste out pronto. Gas can be counteracted by getting a good probiotic...you should be getting about 3-5 billion CFU (colony forming units) per day. Unless you have really bad diahreah or an issue like GERD or IBS, you are fine with lots of fiber. Quite frankly, I stopped tracking mine becuase MPF is way to low on fiber and protien requirements
Sooo helpful. Before i made this board I was going to cut my fiber & protein intake! How about NO!
I want my body to be flushed out, I've probably got all kinds of bad stuff in there.0 -
I like to look at it this way: generally speaking, the foods that are high in fiber are the foods that we should be consuming the most of...fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. There really isn't such a thing as too much fiber, although as a few have already mentioned, if your body is not accustomed to consuming higher levels of fiber, there CAN be some rather...unpleasant side effects. These are typically temporary until your body adjusts.
Thank you very much, sir.0 -
To me, who has been to the doctor for crap pinned to my colon like graphiti spray painted on New York City walls, this is a GOOD (very very good) thing!
I'm so sorry, I hope you don't find this offensive, but my belly hurts from laughing at this statement.0 -
I'm always over, too. At 1:30 pm right now, I am at 19, my daily goal is 18.0

No problem! Glad I could help. I HIGHLY recommend trying Kashi's Truly Vanilla oatmeal, and adding your blueberries and strawberries to it! SO YUMMY! It feels like you're cheating! I'm sending you a friends request0 -
I have my fiber goals set at 35 gms, but I consider 50 gms optimal. And it's not why you think--I'm not bogged down like the Activa commercials gently say. I like this amount of fiber because it's filling, and each gram of fiber represents 4 calories your body can't use. So, for example: if you eat 22 grams of fiber that means 88 calories of your total leave your body without being processed as calories your body could store.
VERY INTERESTING!

Everyday on my food counter I go over in Fiber.
Is this bad? If so, what will it do to me?
I'm not sure it is possible to get too much fiber, as long as you are eating a diet with enough variety to get proper nutrition.
I'm thinking I have a pretty good variety. I also went over 8g in protein yesterday.
Then you are probably fine. If you aren't having any GI problems, I wouldn't worry about it.0 -
I set my Fiber goal for 25g day and average around 30g. 16g is too low for sure!0

On average I eat 50g of fiber a day. I eat so much fiber now it doesn't affect my like before. When I first started dieting, I thought 20 grams was going to kill me. 50g is a walk in the park. Doesn't even create gas anymore. Today is unusaul, I am already up to 54g today and I haven't had dinner yet. This might get interesting. With dinner tonight I will probably be well over 60g.0

I ,too, eat 50-60 grams of fiber per day. You do have to drink plenty of water to make sure you don't become constipated, but if you do that....really shouldn't have any issues. One must give their body time to adjust to an increased amount of fiber.
Do make sure not to take any medications you are on with a high dose of fiber. It can reduces it's effectiveness.0
