Baby Carrots & Water

This might come off as a stupid question... but hey whatever:smile:

Does anyone else have this issue? I love baby carrots. I am perfectly happy to snack away on a 1/2 bag of them at a time with a big jug of water. The problem is that even when I eat a lunch before (for instance a can of soup today) I feel almost as though I am STARVING after I eat them. I'm not. I know that I don't need more food but my tummy gets that "come on...feed me!" feeling. After 32oz of water and quite A LOT of carrots it seems ridiculous. :ohwell:

I guess it's ok to tell me that it's just me and mind over matter or whatever but I just didn't know if maybe if there was a reason behind it. :blushing:

that happens to me sometimes after I eat an apple. i think it is because there is a lot of water in them and mostly fiber, no protein, so even though your belly is literally full and bloated it is not necessarily as satisfied. Try eating a small piece of cheese or a piece of a fruit & nut bar with it.

Usually when I am feeling sort of full like that, just a small amount of protein will make me feel totally full.

Pair the baby carrots with a protein (like almonds) and you will feel fuller. I eat an apple, baby carrots, and raw almonds just about every day for a snack- to me it is a very yummy combination, and the crunch, fiber and protein factors all contribute to a very satisfying snack!

I have the same issue. I usually have a little glass of milk after I finish the carrots, then let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

I'll be hungry again in a couple hours, but I actually get a full/satisfied feeling with the milk.

Come to think of it, a glass of milk after any smaller meal or snack usually makes the hungry feeling go away. Probably more mental than physical, but it works!
  • You definitely need protein. Protein at every meal. It will make a difference.

I have good results when I add some fat to my fruit/veggie snacks too. A little ranch, or peanut butter fixes it right up :)

No question is stupid:bigsmile: Sweeter vege's always make me hungrier all day long as well. Try some cheese with them or one of the laughing cow wedges.....something to counter balance the sweet and add a touch of protein. Happy eating.

Protein is the trick to help you feel full for an extended time.

I always carry some almonds in a ziploc bag in my purse and eat a serving of them. They seem to hold off the hunger pangs the best, especially when I had a non protein meal.

Try to have protein in the morning too, so that you are not sooo hungry for lunch, or if you know that you won't be able to take a lunch on time. If you do get hungry before you can eat lunch, pop some of those almonds (non salted ones). They also have a skinless almond that I tried the other day which was pretty good.

I actually went through a baby carrot addiction. I started with 1/2 lb a day and by the end I was eating 3-4 lbs of carrots a day! I would eat 1 - 2 lbs with a sandwich for lunch, another lb after work and another lb with some almonds for an evening snack. Everyone asked if I was using fake tanning lotion because my skin got so orange. I never had any adverse reactions and I swear my eyesight got better because of it (in 30 years they had never improved at a check-up and this time they did!) I didn't feel full after eating them either so I kept eating and eating. I've heard of other people with this type of problem. I finally got over it when I got ahold of some carrots that weren't that great. I didn't want to waist them so I slowly ate them until they were gone (I bought 10 - 20 lbs at a time). After that they didn't taste quite the same anymore. This went on for an entire year. I would definately recommend eating them with something else to help you feel fuller. It is recommended to eat a protein with your carbs at every meal and snack to help keep insulin levels stable so you don't get that hungry feeling anyway. Light string cheese is a great option!

protein and fat in addition to the carrots might help. Hummus is a nice pair with veggies.

I eat baby carrots for a mid morning snack nearly every day (at least for the past week). I eat them slowly. It will take me about 30 min to eat a little over a cup of baby carrots. I notice that before I'm halfway through my stomach is growling like I haven't eaten in weeks. I initially thought it was because I was hungy and it kinda felt that way. But I realize now that i was just digesting them. This may not be the reason you feel like you're starving but it is for me. I ignore it for a little while and then I feel very full until Lunch.

:flowerforyou: I am psyched at the responses to this! I truly had reservations about posting it because I thought "I'm gonna tell these people I ate 1/2 bag of carrots and am hungry...they're gonna think i'm crazy!" I do usually have a protien of sorts with every meal, but not every snack. Thank you all so much!
