I Hate My Husband's Total Gym

...he seems to think it's safer than free weights. He'll show me a free weight move on youtube, etc. and then the Total Gym version. I just can't see how he thinks it's equivalent. Some of those exercises on the machine seem to really strain the lower back. He got hurt deadlifting once and now he tells me to NEVER ever do a squat with free weights, only on the Total Gym. I told him I'd rather learn proper technique and just leave the Total Gym alone. I hate the Total Gym, it's anti-intuitive for me. And I'm just a novice starting out weight training.

I'm thinking of buying The New Rules of Lifting for Women on Amazon today and just do my own thing. I don't want to start out wrong, on a machine!!

Suggestions?

He only hurt himself once, and said it was while deadlifting... but he tells me to only do squats on the machine. I'm not sure why or how it's related. I think he's just cautioning me against heavy lifting, I don't know. Also, he's not as familiar with some of the names of these exerccises. Plus, I've been reading a lot about this lately and I think he's trying to caution me not to get too carried away with it and hurt myself.

The Total Gym is hardly a gym. Hit the free weights. Nothing like learning it old school.

People who hurt themselves normally neglected to learn the correct form or are using way too much weight for an exercise.

    1. Don't speak badly of the Total Gym. Chuck Norris will find you.
    2. Get New Rules, but don't let the Total Gym know.
    3. The Total Gym is bs. I'm not afraid of Chuck. Just don't tell him I said that.

I suggested this! I told him that maybe he was using too much or just not using correct form and he got super defensive about it, he snapped at me :-) So I kind of just left that alone...

Excellent Book, order it! My husband goes to the gyn 5x a week for 2 hours. He's been weight lifting since high school and he's now mid 40's. We discuss technic but he never tells me how to do my training. Men work on thier top, women usually work thier bottom half. This book goes throught the exercises, but also discusses whole body. I've read and reread my book. I've been going to the gym now for 14 months and along with diet changes have lost 129 lbs.

His experience shouldn't dictate what you choose to do. Try a few different routines and decide what suits you

It doesn't dictate what I do... that's why I'm trying to figure things out myself. I know what he's telling me doesn't quite add up. I want to do it "right".

I heard Chuck Norris is going to be on the 49ers sideline this Saturday. He's our back up kicker.

Ha ha! Exactly... I was actually surprised at the venom in his quick comeback. We *were* able to discuss this civilly again last night, however. He did agree that: (1) it was either too much weight, or (2) he was using bad form. He's growing up! :D Anyway... I asked him again why he said NO SQUATS when it was a deadlift that hurt him. He just replied: "Scooby says not to" LOL. He's referring to Scooby of scoobysworkshop.com, and I like Scooby, he makes me laugh. Just not certain I'm going to follow all of Scooby's advice....

Yeah i can really relate to the whole pride issue. Most people who have bad form will continue to use bad form even if you let them know that their bad form will lead to injury they just keep going.

    >weak guy at my gym
    >doing 3 plate squats
    >terrible form
    >not even near low enough
    >let him know he is bound to hurt himself
    >show him proper form
    >he keeps putting on more weight
    >more bad form
    >gets up to a 5 plate "curtsy" like squat
    >he must feel so strong.

Learn your form and disregard the bro-science

I like a lot of scooby's stuff, but he can get a bit out of hand at times.

Do you think I can learn form from a book? I just got New Rules of Lifting for Women on Amazon today. I don't really want to go into a gym... and I know for a fact my husband isn't going to like the idea of that either. He has some free weights, dumbbells... I have a kettlebell. I'd like those adjustable dumbbells but I think they are super expensive....

I might need to go see a trainer to teach me good form, right? Honestly don't know if my husband has the best, lol. Not to pick on him, of course. But I asked him if we have a barbell. He showed it to me and it's just this bar... like, a hollow metal pipe thingy. He slides the weight on and there's nothing to secure it!! I asked him if it was dangerous... like will the weights slide off? He said to "just be careful with it"... ummm, how the hell am I going to just be careful with it when I'm pumping heavy weight up into the air??
