I do these as a part of my weight lifting program using a 50 lb dumbell, 3 sets of 8. I was in my power sculpt class yesterday and my instructor had us do this. The highest weight we have in the room are 10 lb hand weights. I went to leave the room to go get heavier weights and my instructor said, you don't want to lift heavy with this exercise- it's not a muscle you want to build, just tone.
This goes against everything that I have come to learn about weight lifting - opinions?

It's unfortunate your gym doesn't have any fitness instructors.0

Hee Hee -okay - thanks. She's great, I just think she was someone who loved fitness so she just started teaching. She's super high intensity and works us hard, but I think she's missing a lot of the knowledge behind it.0 -
A lot of those instructors learn a specific course and thats all the know, My gym is full of them... Not everyone can know everything and they are doing great things with helping others to lose weight. Also the purpose of that class is probably to 'tone up' and not to 'build up' ..0

I think it depends on what you want. I wouldn't want to build mine really. I would want to burn fat and let the muscle show, but keep it as small as possible.0
