Weighing?

I have set a goal to only weigh once a month because I dont want to be devastated if it hasnt moved as much as I want it to. Is this impractical? Should I weigh once a week instead to have a better idea of how I am doing? I dont want to be led by the number on the scale. I pay attention to how my clothes feel and use that to judge how I am doing, unless I step on the scale. Once I do that my day is based on that number. If its lower than I thought my day is good, higher my day is shot to he**. Any suggestions, thoughts or ideas?

I think that's a brilliant idea. Just be sure you're logging your food and exercise so you know you're on track with your eating and exercise. I was just thinking the same thing!! I would rather see I lost 10 lbs than 0.8 (even though it's a loss not a gain) I still like the bigger numbers.

Sounds completely sensible to me. Well done!! I refuse to live by the number on a scale alone, that's why I take measurements and chart those. :o) (If you must have a sneaky peak, then one every two weeks won't hurt.)

Thanks. I think i will stick to the once a month. But maybe it is a good idea to get all of my measurements too. This may keep my mind off of the scale too. I think MFP only has neck, waist and hips. I need more than that to get a good sense of total inches lost right? What measurements are good?
  • I measure neck (but only for calculating body fat %, I don't record it), chest, waist, chips and thigh.

You have to do what's right for you.

Some weigh every day, I weigh every Monday at 12pm. If weighing once a month is what feels right for you then go for it.

I only take measurements once a month (1st) so that I can get a better idea, some take them every day or week.

You have to do what is best for you and NO ONE can tell you that it is wrong.

Wish I had the courage to do it once a month. Lol.

  • personally i feel you should weigh yourself once a week. what if for some reason you underestimate your calories for an entire month and end up gaining weight? wouldn't you rather find out you were miscalculating after a week or two rather than an entire month?

but that's just my opinion. i feel most people would be devastated to find out that an entire month was spent miscalculating and gaining weight if they are trying to lose weight.
  • I choose to weigh in about once a week, but like you, I can look at a mirror or see how my clothes fit to know if I'm progressing. Remember too, if you're working out, as you lose fat you'll gain muscle, so measurements (thighs, waist, hips, neck) may show progress that the scale can't.
  • I have a few questions. How long have you been doing this? How much do you want to lose? Are you working out in addition to (I hate the word) "dieting"? I weighed myself every week for 6 months until I reached my goal weight, now I do it twice a month just to keep myself in check. I agree that the scale can definitely affect how you feel, another way is to see how your clothes fit.
  • I weigh myself whenever I am curious on how I am doing.(for sure once a week) I don't let the scale rule me, I Iet it GUIDE me in how I should or shouldn't be eating. If I am stuck at a certain weight, I will look at my diary and see if I need to have a "cheat" day to mess around with my metabolism to get me going again. (and I think today is a cheat day:smile: ) Also if I see a increase in weight, I think, "ok, I need to watch closer my intake and do more exercise".

When I first started on here, I had a very strict diet I followed to get the maximum weight loss right away. This really motivated me. I know now, that it is a slower weight loss and has to be in order to keep it off. This is a lifestyle change, not a short term change. That is the most important thing I keep telling myself. If I want to eat a cookie, I will eat a cookie. If I deprive myself of it today, I may eat 5 tomorrow.

I am no pro at this. I have lost 29lbs since Nov 13th. I have dropped one to two clothes sizes depending on styles. But I feel like for once in my life, I AM IN CONTROL of my food. It is not controlling me. Your attitude is what will help you succeed. I have around 57 lbs to go to what I would like to see my weight at. But, maybe less. It all depends how I look as I lose more weight.

So, this was long winded but I hope it helps. Just remember, the scale is only numbers. I have found when the scale doesn't move, my measurements have. I measure my arm, thigh, knee area, calf, chest, hips, and stomach. Also, on the days where the scale is my enemy I will put on my favorite jeans that are now about baggy on me, and it motivates me more with the positive attitude those baggy jeans give me with how far I have come!(my profile picture shows my favorite jeans)

    Good luck!

I have been on MFP about a month or two and have been doing really well. It took me about 1 year to lose 15 lbs because I didnt work out and yoyo dieted. I want to lose 40 lbs by May. Yep, I do work out but need to increase it.
