I am popping my own corn using a brown bag in the microwave (saw it on Dr.Oz).

I get different answers to how many calories I am consuming. Do the calories increase after you pop it??

How do you do that? How much oil do you use, how do you keep it from leaking thru the bag?
  • I use 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels and 1 tsp of olive oil, staple the bag with 2 staples at the top and microwave. Microwave time may vary depending on your microwave, but mine is usually 1:30 to 1:50 minutes. I looked up the calories for the kernels and the oil and come up with 160 calories for the whole bag.

I just put the corn in the bag. No oil. Some times I put a pack of splenda or a little salt.

No the calories are the same before and after
  • I haven't saw that on Dr. Oz! Good idea though and glad you mentioned it!

    The calories decrease after popped.
  • The calories decrease after popped.

I agree with this. My labeled bags say 120 cals unpopped, 100 once it's popped. So calories decrease with popping. I assume some of the energy (ie calories) escapes when the kernals pop :)
