Knee Injury

Hey guys,
I've done this about 5 times now in the last 10 years. This last time was at the gym a couple days ago. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue before and if you've had it checked out. Anatomically I'm sure this isn't what is happening, but it completely feels like my knee is dislocating. There's a really deep popping feeling as if something is popping out of place. It completely takes your breath away and it one of the worst pains I've felt. Once it pops back in (a few seconds later) you can breathe again but then its just sore and swollen. I'm not sure if the popping is audible or not. I had gone to campus care a few days after this happened one time and they said I may have dislocated my kneecap. They took some x-rays to make sure so bones were chipped, but couldn't really offer much other than giving vicodine out like candy (gotta love campus care).
I've been icing it and wearing a knee brace to work and stuff. Its just kinda tender. Like I said, just curious if anyone else has had this happen and what you've been told it was.
Thanks,
Cat

I fell down the stairs in 2008 and injured my left knee. I never got the proper care for it...
So now that injury, combined with my massive weight problem does a number on my knee!!!
I've been walking to lose weight, and I just can't seem to go fast because my knee "locks up" on me. Talk about shooting pains and even nasea... If I had to say, I'd say I have bad arthiritis in that knee.0 -
You both need to follow up with docs an get MRIs of your knees. I had a meninscus tear that only got worse by ignoring it. It had the popping going on when I fully bent my knee and it would swell and lock my knee.
Good luck to you both.0 -
MRI??? I know in theory, and probably in fact, that is what I should do... but with no insurance and little $ I probably won't get one anytime soon. I haven't been to the dr in over a year, and I've been sick or in pain quite a bit. I just take hot showers, or baths with epsom salt and use a heating pad.0

recently did a number on my knee as well. therapist at my gym gave it a good evaluation ... did not feel need to advance to a doctor. advised icing numerous times a day, elevation, anti inflamatory but said to keep moving due to the knee wants to move and not lock up. agree that you should be evaluated by some type of knowledgable professional and not just self evaluate. best wishes0

I agree with chuckles 217, don't ignore the pain. Get your knees thoroughly checked out with a specialist if necessary. Until you know what is happening with your knee, I would not stress it any further, you are only young but damage could become permanent.
FWIW I injured my knees years ago and found physiotherapy helped a great deal. Its important to strengthen the tendons/joints around the knees and there could be exercises that could help you.
I still suffer from knee pain from time to time. As always, I try to listen to my body when exercising. If it hurts I stop.0
