Can you really burn calories by stretching on a mat?
I'm not being negative at all I just got done doing a yoga class and it felt like I wasted my time. What are the fitness benefits of yoga?

anyone who has done yoga will tell you it's definitely a workout, especially vinyasa/hatha. It's a sequence of positions that challenge your strength, flexibility, stamina, and focus. I've burned the upwards of 600 calories in an hour long class.0

Exactly. There are a lot of different kinds of yoga - power yoga is especially difficult. I don't burn as many calories as a high impact cardio workout but it has really helped my upper body strength.0 -
As a yoga instructor, it is so important to help people pick the right yoga class! There are about 50 (and counting!) yoga practices, and depending on your age/ capabilities, etc.. you can get one hell of a workout. The one that has people in a sweat is called Bikram yoga, or hot yoga. It is done in a heated room, lets you stretch into positions you didn't think possible! Power yoga is a form of yoga that has the yogis stay in difficult poses. This use of your own body weight tones, tightens, and firms jiggly spots! (Reduces cellulite too0

I LOVE Yoga!! It has made a HUGE difference in my life. I only do it about once a week, and just that helps me. Depending on the yoga instructor, book, dvd, and your own participation; you are going to get a different "feel" after a session. I've done some classes where they instructor focuses on stretching more, or another where it is about balance. Just depends. But I always break a sweat holding those poses and breathing.
Benefits for me:
Sleep Better
Stress Reducer
Aids in Digestion
Mood Enhancer
Muscle Tone
Better Balance0
