weight training?

I need some advice on weight training. I do lots of cardio, but generally I just do some weight machines as an extra at the end of my workouts. I need help, advice, routines, etc. I want to make this an integral part of my exercise. HELP!

    Starting Strength by mark rippetoe

"new rules to lifting for women" or something like that is often talked about here

5x5 is also a great way to get into lifting, VERY simple, and a nice gradual increase in weight over a longer period of time.

I've ordered the New Rules book. For right now, I've cobbled together a plan based on my reading and with some input from one my gym's trainers. I logged some workouts w/weights last week (Tues, Wed and Fri, I think), so you're welcome to look at my diary. I'm a beginner, too!

I'm reading the New Rules of Lifting for Women as well but also just heard about Jamie Eason's plan: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/jamie-easons-livefit-phase-1.html?mcid=TC-jelivefit&rmid=jamie_eason_livefit_week1&rrid=6884380

Check out the www.bodybuilding.com site - there's an area for Getting Started where you can go through some selections and it'll help you build a plan.

Also, I really like this site because you look up based on an area you want to work or a specific exercise: http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

If you want options for at home, check YouTube as well - there's lots of at-home weight training instruction available.

I lift and have read the new rules of lifting for women. Personally, I'd start with the stronglifts 5x5 plan as it starts of light with compound moves that work your whole body. The first few weeks focus on light weights to let you learn the moves. I dropped 8 lbs in my first 2 weeks combined with a high protein clean eating plan which finally moved my 140lbs plateau!

Tons of evidence has shown that augmenting cardio with weight training helps dramatically in weight loss and injury prevention. Without more specifics about what areas you traying to target (legs, arms, core, overall?), I'd recommend reading the article on beginning fitness here: .

    http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/12/09/beginner-body-weight-workout-burn-fat-build-muscle/

It will give you an overview of some good circuits you can perform with minimal equipment. Once you're good there, you might want to try the next level up:

    Hope this helps!
