Another one of my partners recipes... Dont worry there isnt any actual sparrows in it. Its steak pie Thought of completely from scratch.
Not sure how fattening it is but its delicious with some potatoes. All ingrediants can be found in low fat/low salt if you look for it.
Sparrow Pie
(Serves 4)
You will need:
600g lean stewing steak
3 cloves garlic
2 teaspoons mustard powder (IMPORTANT - Must be powder)
3 teaspoons tomato puree
2 stock pots (I use Knox rich beef but any will do)
1 teaspoon parsley
1 pack ready rolled puff pastry*
1 tablespoon multi purpose flour
pinch salt
pinch pepper
1 teaspoon oil
1ltr boiling water
Place the stewing steak and flour in a food bag and shake until the steak is covered in flour.
In a large frying pan heat the oil and add the stewing steak and crushed garlic and fry until brown.
In a 1ltr jug add the mustard powder, tomato puree, stock pots, parsley, salt and pepper and water and mix until the puree, mustard powder and stock pots have dissolved.
Add to the frying pan and simmer for 2 1/2 - 3 hours stirring regularly until most of the liquid has gone. It is important to stir regularly to stop sticking and a skin forming on top.
When steak is tender add to a pie dish, cover with the pastry and bake in a preheated oven at 190oC for 20-25 minutes until the pastry is a golden brown.
Serve with steamed potatoes and vegetables of your choice.
