Paula Deen on the Today Show - what's your opinion?

I like her son's cooking show called "Not My Mama's Meals" where he takes her recipes and shows you how to make them in a healthier way
I thought it was quite a co-inkydink that the Food Network started airing this show right around the time Paula annouced that she has Diabetes.0 -
My mom swears by Paula Deen, adding insane amounts of butter and salt to her foods. She says, "well Paula Deen does it and shes on tv." So maybe this will be a wakeup call.0

She is making herself a spokes person for Diabetes. She is the last person in the world to take advice from. Type two diabetes is a DIET an LIFESTYLE induced disease. Here's MY advice. Eat EVERYTHING that she does not and you'll be much healthier. I've watched her shows for years. Her idea of fresh vegetables is a sprig of mint in her whipped cream. Love her cooking, great if I want to die 10 years earlier and keep gaining weight like she does. Not saying it doesn't taste delicious. It is just that it WILL kill you. I am going heavily vegetarian with emphasis on VEGGIES both fresh and cooked! Check out my food diaries to see what I mean!0

Anybody else see Paula Deen on the Today Show this morning?
I didn't have particular feelings towards her one way or another, but now I just straight up dislike her. She is basically advocating drugs (and getting compensated by a pharmaceutical company) over lifestyle changes to help type 2 diabetes. It's irresponsible. She has millions of followers who may follow her terrible advice. Plus? She waited three years to tell the public. I wouldn't care if she weren't famous, but she has a public responsibility with that damn cooking show of hers, and she's just exacerbating something that she could be helping.
What are your thoughts?
I like Paula Deen and this is a choice that many people are making. Why make a healthy change when you can just take a pill. I dont dislike her because of this its her choice. Any adult who chooses to do the same is making his or her own choice as well. On a side note I would rather have something with a cup of natural butter than a teaspoon of fake margarine.0 -
agreedI'm sorry, but if unless she forced people to cook and consume everything on her show, she has no responsiblity to her audience. They are responsible for what they purchase, prepare and consume.0
-
I have to admit every recipe I have ever made of hers is delicious, but I know is very fattening. I make sure others are going to help me eat any recipe of hers that I make. I also know eating her recipes on a regular basis would make me gain weight! She should admit, with her diabetes status, that her recipes aren't the healthiest...she almost seemed offended when one of her sons was on a show telling about the lighter versions (she showed up via satellite).
Her recipes are for "once a year and make sure you are sharing"!!0 -
FWIW, drugs are often necessary. Diet and exercise help considerably, but for some people drugs keep them alive.0

I wish she could use her plight with diabetes to lead her massive audience in the direction of healthier food and lifestyle choices, By saying 'I'm not going to change the way I cook' and 'Diabetes is not a death sentence' and relying on drugs rather than exercise/diet/weight loss, she's doing a disservice to her fan base.
I realize we all have free will. It's her life to live how she chooses. Also, her audience shares that same free will and personal responsibility for their own choices. I just wish she had chosen to set a better example.0 -
French toast!
That's the ONE Paula Deen recipe I was Sooooo tempted to save in Evernote. French toast made with a hunk of real French bread, cream & sugar galore...0 -

Well said. I agree.0 -
I have never liked Paula Deen. I cannot stand her accent and I'm from the south. Actually, if you see some of her VERY old stuff, her accent wasn't nearly as heavy. Even before I dropped meat, dairy, and eggs from my diet, I cringed when I saw her cooking. Way too high in fat. I cannot stand deep fried foods. Yuck.
Like someone else mentioned, Paula Deen has never been the picture of healthy living - she is a picture of high sugar, high fat, high calorie foods like she cooks. If you eat her cooking, you shouldn't be shocked when you develop diabetes.
Because obesity, hypertension, and diabetes are such terrible problems in this country, I do think that TV chefs and TV networks do have a responsibility to either give healthy diet information or their shows should come with a warning label...just like cigarette packages do.
Fat does not cause Diabetes.................
Carbs in the form of sugar, starch (aka corn, wheat, sugar, flour, etc) is what causes Diabetes.
I have been eating a very high fat diet, including lots of raw butter and raw heavy cream and have gotten off all medications. It is called a controlled carb lifestyle to reverse Diabetes and increase insulin sensitivity again.
All Paula Dean needs to do is drop the sugar and high carby, starchy crap and make up new recipes that are higher fat, moderate protein, low carb and she could keep on cooking and control her Diabetes, lose weight and get healthy again, all with no medication..........
It saddens me to see someone being controlled by the Big Pharmaceutical companies when dietary changes are all that are necessary.0 -
I was diagnosed as having pre-diabetes about a year and a half ago. I then lost 60lbs and was told I was no longer in danger of becoming a type 2 diabetic.
What bothers me about Paula Deen is she is basically saying in not so many words - Instead of changing my life style, and cooking healthier foods, and exercising, and quitting smoking (all things that can reverse and get rid of the type 2), I'm going to manage my diabetes by pill popping/injections - .
Now I agree she never told anyone to eat her food, but as a public figure with a cooking show on a very popular network, where people often watch the shows to get cooking tips or recipes, she is definitely sending a message with what she makes.
This would be a fantastic opportunity for her to say "Come with me on this journey to good health. I'm going to change the way I've been eating and living, and want you to do that with me. It can be done, so let's do it together y'all." She could change her show up, and take all the same foods (minus the donut burger), and make healthier versions!
I just think it's sad she isn't taking this opportunity for herself...to change her life, and instead of just living with type 2...really doing something about it and reversing her diagnosis!0 -

Why should she change the way she cooks? Clue. The way she cooks might not equal the way she eats every day
Why shouldn't she say "dibetes is not a death sentence"? It's clearly not.
Some have to rely on drugs. Some are able to get off of them but not all.0 -

^^ that.
I'm not saying what she said about the medication was right, But i have been a Huge Fan of hers for years. She's always been real. She doesn't pretend to be anything but Paula. One of her "sayings" is "I'm your cook, not your doctor."
I'm a born and raised Southern Girl, so I was raised on finger lickin country cookin. She will tell the audience atleast once throughout the show that "This ain't the way i eat all the time." Somewhere along the time you have to be responsible for your own actions. Even the most Nutritionally challenged person knows that 3 sticks of butter is not good for you. I make alot of Paula's recipes. I will substitute things, and put my own twist to make it a bit healthier.
I have always loved watching cooking shows, and at one time i wanted to be a chef..I remember growing up watching Julia Child..God love her, but that woman put just as much butter in her dishes as Paula does, and never heard any grief about it.
Noone is perfect. especially "celebrities"0 -
I don't know, her recipe for Deep-fried Metformin Balls is to die for.
And the Glimepiride Crusted Sow Belly never fails to deliver.0 -

Paula Deen made Paula Deen fat.
Paula Deen put herself at a high risk for diabetes.
You made you fat.
You put yourself at risk for diabetes and other diseases when you make unhealthy lifestyle choices.
You will remain fat when you ignore personal responsibility and blame your choices on anyone save yourself.
That being said, I LOVE PAULA DEEN. =\ Y'all are trippin .0 -
I love watching Paula Dean...turn the channel when Giada comes on (just a personal perference)! Now if you ask me if I have ever made any of her recipes, my honest answer is no. But I watch her for the entertainment. She just makes me laugh and smile. He accent, her laugh and her smile just instantly warms my heart. I am not one to judge anyone but there appears to be many on MFP that do just that. I admire her love for family and friends. I wish I could be more like her in that she doesn't meet a stranger and is not afraid to give someone a hug and a kiss!! That being said, I pray Paula finds the strength to over come the obstacles and battles that are in front of her. As I pray the same for MFP friends!!!0

Oh my gosh! Enough with the pics. You're making my stomach growl :laugh:0

How abut people stop expecting the rest of the world to change for us.She has a right to cook and eat how ever she freaking wants. She never claimed her crap was healthy, and if people choose to eat it every day that is their choice and their responsibilty not hers.People are harming themselves with their own laziness, I cant remeber the last time she forced her Fat sugar or starch on anyone. I havent heard stories about her sitting on peoples chests forcing food into their mouths?
:drinker: :drinker: :drinker: :drinker: :drinker:
LOVE THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
I don't have a problem with her eating or doing whatever she wants with her own life, but when you are in the public eye and have your face plaster on everything from lip balm to pots and pans don't you have some responsibility for what you push onto a national platform?? It seems really strange to me to hear comments where she shouldn't be held somewhat accountable for pushing these bad food choices. Its easy to sit on the other side of our weightloss success and say the sheep should know better, no one made them watch those show's and no one forced the food down there throats. But isn't that what got us into the mess we found ourselves in, fast food commercials, ads, T.V. shows focusing on high carb food and sugar loaded treats, etc... The temptations that was and still are around every corner. I am smart enough now to realize what is good for me and what is not but 3 years ago That Double Chocolate German cake she baked would not have last the weekend because I didn't have the willpower or knowledge to stop myself from making bad choices and when someone is on T.V. advocating that it is the bomb then yes those sheep are going to agree. There is a big difference when someone is doing this to themselves behind closed doors or is in the public eye..... As far as her Diabetes, I am a type 2 Diabetic and I to believe everyone should be checked and educated. I do think that a total lifestyle change is needed when you are diagnosed because it was the bad food choices that cause my obesity which caused my diagnosis.
Actually her food didnt get me into my weight problem, neither did fast food. Drug abuse did but thats a whole nother story. If people can not resist seeing a freaking hamburger on TV thats their problem that is something they need to fix in themselves. Pesrsonal responsibilty is such a thing of the past now its disgusting. To say I just couldnt resist that big mac because I saw the commercial on tv is a cop out0 -
What turned me off on Paula Deen was when she became a spokesperson for Smithfield. TOTAL turn-off if you know anything about factory farming.0

I know your a vegan, but I am looking at Giada's recipes and not all of them are bad..........
I follow a very controlled carb eating plan for control of my Diabetes without medications and I am almost to the point of reversing it back to normal again.............
I would be able to eat this recipe with no issues at all:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/roman-style-chicken-recipe/index.html
and this one too............
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/salmon-baked-in-foil-recipe/index.html
Of course being Diabetic I would not eat any of her pasta or desserts, but I know with Giada I can find things that I can have on my lifestyle.
So she cooks WAYYYYYYYYYYY healthier most of the time than Paula Dean.
And she looks way better too.

I think she is a fat-sugar-starch pusher, who should atone for her sins. She is harming people by giving everyone the idea that feast foods should be everyday foods. We have enough of that message from greedy corporations who don't care if they throw us under a bus, as long as they get our money.
She should do FREE public service messages, and if she teaches anyone about food, it should be how to make delectable foods that nourish us and sustain our health.
She's made enough money off the fat of the land.
I'm a mostly whole-food vegan, who has mostly gotten the fat-sugar-refined-flour monster off her back. But, that said, we need to start promoting health in this country, or anyone under the age of 40 is going to be working to support the baby boomer demographic (which I belong to), when they start falling apart.
I was refering to the majority of the population, she has no "sins" to atone for. People can make up their own minds if she choses to cook the way she does and eat it thats her choice her right,if others choose to watch her,buy her products and eat the way she does it is also their choice their life. We live in a society of celebertiy worship its not the celebertiys fault its the fault of the person to weak minded to think for themselves
I am not talking about taking away 1st amendment rights to free speech, but I am talking about trying to shape up a society that is on a collective binge. I was using the term 'sin' in a figurative sense, but I can see that you didn't read it that way. It may be a generational thing, but Paula Deen being of my generation, looks like she's whoring for dollars, and doesn't care one whit about anyone. She doesn't even eat her own..ahem...creations. But fine, let everyone think that Paula Deen cooking is the norm. And let everyone need coronary bypass surgery. We are all subject to societal norms, and it takes a strong person to break free.
She isnt telling anyone her cooking is a norm nor did I. you are subject to societal norms if you let yourself be.0 -
She does high-carb desserts, too.
So what? So does Giada
And Bobby and Guy and Rachel and Ina and every other Food Network star. They are desserts. You don't have to prepare them every day, or ever.0
