Healthy Snacks on the go

I know there are other posts about low calorie snacks, etc... but I'm wondering if you have ideas for things to keep on hand (ie. in your bag or in the car) that are healthy (clean eating) snacks. I know it helps a ton for me to have something on hand so I'm not tempted to pick up a quick fix (ie. drive through meal, vending machine) when I get hungry! I'm going on a trip soon and will need snacks with me then as well.

Any suggestions? I'm especially interested in snacks around 200 calories :)

My default "in the bag" snack is almonds, but I'd love to add some variety without resorting to pre-packaged foods.

  • Have you tried making your own protein bars? They run anywhere from 130-200 calories. Go to youtube.com and search it. Super easy to make. I have a friend who makes them and sells them for 21 bars for $22. Let me know if you end up doing it.

Look up Jamie Eason. She is great! or bodybuilder.com. Both will come up in the search engine.

I just started buying the granola in a bag in the organic food section. It has some dried fruit, almonds, oats. I add some dark chocolate yogurt covered raisens(just a couple) for my sweet tooth. I put about 1/4 c(serving size) in ziplock bags about a wks worth. easy snacking on the go etc. I keep one in my purse too. And it's under 150calories.

& special k crackers are good. 24 crackers for 120 calories. and whole grain. It's good with hummus too(if you like that).
  • I love almonds (:

Bananas are portable and come with a fetching travel outfit. Sunflower seeds are loaded with vitamin e and super dark chocolate (my default super market brand is the Lindt 85%) has iron, always handy. Cheese survives quite well without refrigeration and 100 calories worth of cheddar would pair well with a few dried figs and a carrot's worth of sticks.

Cheese sticks or mini-babybels. Roast soy beans. Satsumas. Grapes. Cherry tomatoes. Celery sticks. Rice cakes..

I'm usually toting any of these at any given moment:

    - Special K bar (ugh, but it has corn syrup so I try not to eat it TOO much)
    - Kashi TLC Trail Mix cookie
    - Baby carrots
    - an apple
    - Half a peanut butter sandwich on wheat

some great ideas, thanks! I am reminded that I *have* made my own protein bars before... and I've bookmarked some recipes for energy balls which sound yummy as well.

I just pulled from the oven my very first batch of homemade muesli- just need to measure it to see what the calorie count will be, but I plan to eat it with plain yogurt... not so 'on the go' but an easy snack!

Thanks again- keep em coming ;)

you could get those super small plastic boxes and pack your own 100 calories snacks: make your own trail mix, try adding some oats instead of a nut you don't like, get dried veggies and snack on those, jlist.com has a little "microwave potato chips maker" for 100 calories you can turn one medium potato into a big handful of fresh, delicious chips :)
  • LOL! I just saw this article the other day and posted it in the forums and kinda got slammed bc it's packaged food. But since that's exactly what you're looking for, have a gander!

I can't have any dairy which makes it a bit harder.

But yeah I agree with almonds - I usually have 25g

    Ryvita are ok I think!

    Any other ideas, people?
